Hey, everyone...

As much as I don't like Palomar Mountain rides (love the road, don't care for the crowds and LEO stings), three friends and I went there yesterday afternoon.

I was amazed at how deserted it was.  Only a handful of cars and VERY few bikes.  No LEO.  Going up the hill, there were only a couple of 'obstacles' which needed to be passed...including one 'Desmo'.

Anyway, as the video suggests, this is an introduction to a fabled stretch of road for some...and for those who have been there...a trip 'up' memory lane.

The next video I'm producing is the other side of the mountain, referred to as the 'fast side'.  I'll try to get that together today and post it up.

Enjoy~

p.s. The first bike you'll see in the video is .oRg member Leon (a.k.a. Herd Meister).

Very cool, appreciate you sharing your videos.

Thanks...

Well, for someone who doesn't really care for Palomar, I found myself there again, today.

It was a little busier than yesterday, but still rather empty.

One rider in our group went wide in a turn and ended up in a ditch. He got some rash on his hands. After we put the bike upright and dressed his wounds, we headed down the 'tight side' and went over to Pala Casino for brunch.

I guess...if Pally is as deserted as it's been the last couple of days, it's not really that awful, after all.

Next video: The 'fast side' or East Grade.

Palomar is a great road.

Best part is that is is really twisty with a lot of 180+ degree corners which are all very slow speed. Very survivable if you go down.

Good video

Thanks, Charles. The quality of the pavement on Palomar is paralleled by only a few others around here...243, for example; bottom 7/8ths of 371, Montezuma...

I can see myself getting back up there again a few times over the summer...

Waiting to see my pix show up on Rick Clemson's site. I know the one he took of me, today, is going to be a good one.

Thanks for the memories...when I was in the Navy and stationed in San Diego Palomar was a great weekday get away, but definitely a place to avoid on the weekends. Everyone in L.A. went up there and parked campers six inches from each other

Hey, brother...when were you in the Navy?

What did you do? To which commands were you attached?

Thanks for your service...I'm prior Navy, too!

I was in from 1968-1972. I was a Radioman (rating doesn't exist any more). I went to basic in San Diego and then did a Westpac tour on the USS Enterprise straight out of boot camp. I was on board in January 1969 when the Enterprise had a fire. After the fire we spent about 10 weeks in Hawaii for repairs and then headed on to the South China Sea. After the Westpac tour the Enterprise went to dry dock in Newport News VA for extensive overhaul. We sailed from San Fransico (Alameda NAS) around Cape Horn to VA. I left the Enterprise there and went to A school in Bainbridge MD. From there it was back to San Diego for high speed International Morse Code School. From there it was off to Hawaii where I was stationed on Ford Island at a place called Fleet Training Group Pearl Harbor. There I taught Morse code to Submarine Sailors. I closed out my tour back in the San Diego area at the Coronado Amphibious Base.

The day I remember most...

Nothing like a fire aboard a ship in the middle of the ocean to motivate you into action...

I drove submarines from 82-85, then did 3 years on an admiral's personal staff (writer); for a grand total of six years (82-88).

Anyway, back to the subject...It must be nice for you to see Pally again. If you're ever out this way, I know a bunch of us would love to take you on a 'reunion' tour.

Glad you enjoyed the video, mang.

I'm listening to your  " rpm' as you  travel .. so of course I'm waiting for  you to "miss" a shift.

Ken: What's your 'assessment' on my shiftiness? I'm eager to know, because I tried covering it up with the music, but to your 'trained' ear...well...you might have some choice words for me.

First of all : In SCAR I trust ! That ride was so much fun, yes up and down that mountain .

It's hard for face-muscles to relax, even days later !! Just thinking about it is so good , but seeing it again ........... Wow !
ThumbsUp.gif

So yes, it's not how fast you go into the corner; it's how low you can lean. That's what will make those nasty chicken-strips dissapear ! People , get your lean -on . Stop speeding ! ( sometimes ). We even had our picture taken in one of those corners. I'm thinking SCREESAVER !
Never liked Palomar , but it was empty and fun.I'll be back !
smile.gif
And Scar........you did it again !
Jimmy and Andrew ....thanks for not making us wait tooooooooooooo long.Next time bring bigger bikes so you can keep up with the herd.
