The La. DMV is telling me I have to take my bike to a local dealer to have it appraised so they know how much to charge me in taxes.
I thought I paid taxes when I bought it new in California. Anyone else go through this. They want it on a dealer letterhead.

Never heard of it.

Vt uses NADA guides.

If your bill of sale does not fall in between the high and low range they charge you the average, the you have 30 days to get a dealer appraisal done for a sales tax rebate.

If you paid taxes in California and can prove it shouldn't you recieve a tax credit for the amount paid.

Ya i would think so -- but the bozos here at the dmv say their nada books dont cover motorcycles
I asked if I could do a nada printout online -- they said no need appraisal on dealer letterhead.

They have that in Missouri, as well. Personal property taxes. My mom bought a horse ranch there...she says they tax her vehicles, campers, tractors, everything...each year.

Amazing. Of course...what else is there?

Not much of a DMV then.

We don't pax excise or property tax , just a 6% sales tax once upon purchase.

Our DMV is equipped to handle cars , boats, ATV's , motorcycles, snowmobiles, trailers both light and heavy, any kind of farm equipment possible.

Louisiana should wake up and see the new millenium.

And people call us Woodchucks . ( LOL)

P.S. You think they would have a form to bring the dealer for amount with there dealer # and signature.

ya well I dont care what you try to do at the dmv here -- it will require at least 2 trips (I'll be on my 4th)
If you buy in state you pay 4% book value sales tax -- if you transfer from out of state you pay a 4% "use" tax

Another efficent state buracuracy I see.

To bad they have got you by the short and curlies.

How about this option, obtain dual residency.

That is what I do having homes in Vt & Ct.

All my vehicles are registered in Vt where there is no property tax vs. Ct which has it.

It's legal and much easier on the wallet.

So maintain a California address and keep the plates you have.

All the older snowbirds that flock from New England to Florida each winter do it too.

NC has something similar. You pay a 'use' tax at DMV and then property tax at your county.

If it's a 'use-tax' you're gonna have to pay. It's a sunk cost. I called our DMV once after selling my car and asked for a refund of the use tax and they said once you pay, you pay. Everyone who does a title transfer pays.

Funny they don't have a MC Nada Guide.... 4 trips is a bit crazy.

Yes, Timmy, but you have snow there!

What else would you use for the snowmachines to ride on.

Winter and the 4 New England seasons rock.

I know the weather in San Diego for the next five years.

Sunny with intermittent chances of earthquakes and fires.
