Moving Busa from CA to Louisiana

I will be moving to Louisiana sometime in the next 3 or 4 months and I want to find out how much it will cost to get the bike out there without me driving it.  I could put it in a U-haul truck but a U-haul truck would cost $1500 minimum and I don't have that kind of money!  Suzuki tells me they could ship it out there for $300!  I actually heard one time, someone told me that I could get it shipped out there for $30 somehow but I don't remember how.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions.  I am looking for a cheap way to get the bike out there... but I want to find a trusted, secure way as well.  I don't want my beautiful busa being scratched or stolen (obviously)!

P.S.  If you think this message should be re-posted elsewhere, please do so.  I would like to get as many suggestions as possible before I go paying someone too much money to move my hayabusa!

i have heard so many horror stories of bikes being shipped it isn't even funny. if you really care about the bike i would get a rental pickup from budget or some other cheap place and then stick it in the back and drive it. put a tarp over it, strap it down, and just drive. don't stop overnight anywhere so it can get stolen. if you don't care about it too much then i would just have someone ship it for you.

if you are going to ship it see if you can get one of the crates the new bikes come to the dealer in.

Drew, I would think the most secure way would be through Suzuki. You can also utilize numerous trucking companies. Just do a google search, and there should be a whole list.

I think you can check forwardair.com. They have decent rates and are somewhat reputable.

I have used them on 3 seperate occasions to ship my Turbo Busa - NEVER had a scratch on it. All they ship is high end vehicles. EXCELLENT communication & timeliness. It costs me 500ish to ship from New Orleans to Miami. So I would guess your costs would be similiar.

I HIGHLY!!!! recommend these guys

Hope this helps

This is of interest to me because I'm moving in June or July to CO, and the thought of riding my bike across KANSAS at that time of year fills me with dread.

(...Seems that Kansas only has interstates to help cut down on their insect population...)

If you're going to ship through a company like Forward Air make sure you build a VERY strong and secure crate. Bad things happen with shipping companies.

U-Haul also rents an awesome motorcycle trailer. I think all it needs is a class 1 hitch. I bought a bike that was several states away. Rented it on Saturday and returned it Monday morning...total was $28.00. It even did a good job at going 110 mph for 5 miles straight (with bike on it) all while being pursued by a tornado.

Only catch is that you must return it to the place you rented it from. If you're planning on making several trips by car or truck and going back any ways that would be the cheapest way plus the bike would never be out of your site.

I'm in Colorado and I'll have my 'Busa by then.

Want to ride sometime?

Whatever shipping method you decide if it involves a shipping company (buy the extra insurance!) Heard some horror stories. Are you driving or flying to LA?

Just out of curiousity... why LA? I had considered this move a while a back (from PA) and everyone I asked who lived/lives there told me it's a $h!thole.

LOL...I lived in NOLA for a couple of years...

Rain, Humidity, Rain, Booze, Rain, Gators, Rain, Snakes, Rain, Hurracanes, Rain, Flooding, Rain, and Love Bugs (twice a year), and, did I mention Rain?

The Love Bugs eat paint, the flooding will eat the bike, the Rain will eat you...

This is my home state and all, but why in the hell would you want to move TO Louisiana?

I'm guessing it's a job situation. Either that or you're a couple cans short of a 6-pack. Whereabout in Louisiana are you moving to? I live in Lake Charles which is about 2 hrs East of Houston and 3 hrs West of New Orleans. I'm also about 3hrs South of Shreveport. Anyway, when I purchased my Busa from Champion Cycle in Chicago...I had it shipped via United VanLines for $500 to my door. Besides hauling it yourself, I think that the Suzuki deal is the way to go. Good Luck, and if there's anything I can help you with, just let me know.

I trailered my bike from Florida to California on a u-haul motorcycle trailer. Watch how close the straps are to the plastic. I got two rub marks from the straps, but otherwise no problems at all. Be sure to check it periodically on the road-straps do loosen.
