My baby is backfiring ...

when I roll off the throttle aggressively, the bike backfires sometimes now, been doing it for a few weeks ...

the bike is a fuelly so it's obviously not a carburetor issue ...

I don't know much about ignition systems on bikes, I would assume my '02 is electronic ignition ? i.e. no points ? So there wouldn't be anything to adjust.

what do you guys think would cause backfiring ? It's not bad fuel, I've been using the same fuel forever .. I'm thinking I need new plugs, I've got 25K on my original ones ??

ideas would be appreciated !!

Thanks Chris !!

if you haven't done any mods to the fuel system ( map, exhaust, air filter,etc...) I would definetly check the plugs to see what kind of shape they are in. if I am correct and backfiring is caused by unburnt fuel igniting on the other side of the combustion chamber, faulty plugs could be the culprit(not firing hot /clean enough to ignite the mixture. otherwise you have some thing that is causing a rich situation in your engine.

Disclaimer. - I am not a mechanic. just a hillbilly that ownes some wrenches.

so let anyone chime in and call me a dumb dumb.

just don't roll off the throttle
just keep on going and going and going.

i have this problem going on and off since I have the D&D bolt ons
it does not really affect me
but i know it can damage the pipe and the exhaust valves

This has recently started happening to me too! I put super gas in, so I'm thinking that may be part of the problem. Next tank will be regular.

Someone else on the board suggested the pair mod (removal).

mine was doing that after the 4 2 1 pipe mod the bike runs lean so i pluged in the tre
and it went away but the power commander will definatly cure it if its not the plugs.

good luck

with a stock exhaust, dunno what to say, the "hillbilly that ownes some wrenches"

probably knows more than me

with aftermarket full system, you need to pull the PAIR system out. I know mine is doing it since I put on a yosh full system but I havent pulled the PAIR yet.....although it does scare the crap outta folks when it backfires when I'm coming to a light

thanks guys, according to the manual I am overdue on air filter and plug replacement, I'll do that first and let ya's know !! thanks guys !!

I have the same problem too! I attribute it to the mod I did to the stock exhaust( i.e. drill holes in the rear ), but it didn't start until about a week ago, and getting worse. I've got about a week or so until I change to a full Hindle system so I guess I'll just leave it til then...
