My Friend and New Bike

Okay, first off, my friend is pretty good kid and I could teach him how to ride. Him seeing me on the busa kind of has him stoked to work his way up to one. I told him to start out on a sv650 but the response I got when he saw it was thats ugly. Then he saw the katana 750. I don't know much about it as I don't hear much about it but would he be alright with this too for first bike? I started on a bandit and he wasn't liking that to much either. What else would you suggest? Thanks!

My bike before the Busa was a Kat 750 and I think it was a great bike. Similar weight to the Busa, but less power.

If your friend has never touched a bike before in his life... then the busa is a very bad choice for a beginer bike. I would suggest you to look into any of the new 600's they are pretty light, and are in no way slow... they look pretty good too. Why dont you suggest your friend o look a one of those...

I myself learnt on a CBR 600F ...

I went from a Katana to my busa, and a good buddy of mine rides a 2000 SV650S. The Kat750 is a nice bike, very forgiving and pretty fast. But it has a lot of expensive plastic and is kinda heavy for a beginning rider. The SV is lighter, handles better and comes away from a drop or slide in (generally) much better shape, especially if you install sliders.

Its his decision, but I'd say start with the SV and trade up when he has learned the ropes.

On top of all that, my bud kicks my ass in the twisties on his SV, every time...

My wife has a Kat 750. Awesome starter bike, and thats all it is. Not very powerful and even harder to get yourself into trouble. Just dont do what I did, took the Bus to work and trying to be the nice guy I jumped on hers to fill it up while she was working. The transition from the Bus to the Kat was scary, thought I was going to break the thing...

If you look at the weight difference between the Kat and the Busa they are almost the same. If your friend is looking to get to the Busa next the Kat is the closest thing weight wise...

SV650... excellent beginner bike... and can be modded into a kick ass bike as you go.

Well he just doesn't like the sv650. He likes hondas 600rr but can't understand why it cost so much. I can't remember why honda's lineup cost more? Is it production materials? Anyways, thanks for the responses guys.

He thought the SV was ugly, but likes the Katana? er... okay. To each his own.

Ninja 500 is an excellent beginner's bike, the Katana as well. If you don;t mind a used bike, a Honda CBR600 F2 or F3 would work too.

Suzuki also has a GS500F, which is a good starter, and looks a lot like the GSXR line. Basically it's a Ninja 500 by Suzuki. But better, because it's not a Kawi.

I would still say the SV650, and if he doesn't like the looks, there are plenty of aftermarket body kits to hide whatever he doesn't like.

I recommend a cheap used bike like an old Katana, GSXR600, or R6. Something cheap that when it gets damaged it won't matter as much. The first and only time i have gone down was the first time i ever sat on my first bike on the day i purchased it. Expect to go down when you are learning and when you don't then be thankful that you are amung the lucky few.

Like Sully said something cheap, an old Ninja 600, or CBR 6 would be cool. If it gets rashed, who cares, or if he's one of the lucky ones he can sell it for what he's got in it once it's time to move up.

Thanks guys,

I'm trying to keep him just in 600 now. Hes seeing prices and is like why don't I just get a haybusa since like honda is like just about 2,000 dollars cheaper. I was like if you go that route, its gonna be a lot more expensive if you wreck a busa. I'm trying to get him talked into an older bike. Hopefully ...

how can he think this is ugly?

haha,, It's not 'busa pretty...but damn... me thinks his defintion of ugly is a bit askew.

He has seen a SV - "S" version right.? with the half fairing?

Honestly, I don't know how he cannot like the sv either. I saw it with the fairings on at our local dealer, all blue, and I thought it was one of the nicest bikes there. I was like just go look at it in person. It got better though, he told me it topped out at 130 or somewhere around there (I'm guessing) so that turned him off. I was like, you are learning, what is going to make you go that fast. Honestly, I think he might be better off being limited to around 90 mph lol

My brother has topped his 05' SV650S out at 146 on a stock bike the little turd was tucked in to some unreal supernatural bump on top of the bike. They are a fast bike to about 110..... then it is all down hill

I work with two guys who have learned how to ride on a Kat 750. Good starter bike but it is expensive if laid down.

I started on a cbr 600f3, but have been told there are better choices
