MY  BIKE QUIT RUNNING!!!

I just had the 7,500 mile service done a few days ago, on my way to work today the bike lost power. I tried to turn down a side street so I could avoid traffic and the bike completely died on me, causing the rear wheel to lock up and I was forced to lay the bike down on the left side. I talked to the dealership and they said it may have something to do with the K&N filter that was installed. A friend who also owns a Busa tells me it sounds like one or more of the spark plugs they replaced was left loose. What do you guys think?

Sorry to hear this! I hope the damage is minimal, to you and the bike.

Naturally, the dealer is going to blame an aftermarket part. What did you expect LOL! Possible loose spark plug, or the coils are not fully seated. Could be a fuel related problem. Low battery voltage can also mask itself as a carb/injection problem. It could be a myriad of things.

No matter what, the dealer will probably deflect any responsibility. I'd advise you to have a peek at the bike yourself, before getting the dealer involved. If you find that it's the dealer's fault, STOP what you are doing, and call them! See if they will make the effort to make things right. Of course, it may not be the dealer's fault.

What did it do when it lost power? Did it surge, did the RPMs vary, was it running unusually hot?

can't see how a K&N would cause it, I've been running mine for over 6 years without any problems. as far as loose plugs (never heard of the outcome of this happening on a bike)seems that loss of enough compression to kill the engine should have let it(the rear wheel) still roll...like when you push start it. but I guess that all depends on road conditions and tire Quality. have a different dealer look her over... less likely will do a cover up. might be a chance the mech left something in or out.

When the bike died, where you on the clutch at all. Does the rear roll at all post accident? When the bike died, were gages still working, did your FI light come on?

The bike has never acted up until today, I'm certain this is the result of the service performed. I really want to see them take it apart so I can see for myself, if not they can tell me anything.

I was'nt on the clutch, I'm not sure if the rear wheel still rolled it happened kinda fast, I did feel it lock up when the bike died. The lights were still on, the oil light and the FI light came on when the engine died.

On a visual inspection of your bike do you see anything unusual, anything hanging that shouldn't be? Have you tried starting or even turning the bike on since the accident. Does your FI light stay on when you try to start it?

Nothing unusual seen, I actually rode the bike back home ( was'nt too far), as long as I keep the rpms up it stays running. It shuts off when I slow down, the FI light isn't on.

Does it run at idle in Neutral or just die? And how high is "keeping the RPMs up?"

If you feel strongly that it's due to the recent service, by all means let them know what happened.

Just be prepared!

laid it down ? hand full of clutch might have saved that...

air filter.... unlikely IMO
Sparkplug.... also pretty unlikely

as the bike was just serviced, the worst case would be inadequate oil level

otherwise, a "loss" of power might be related to fuel pump/filter

if the motor just turned off instantly, maybe more likely to be electrical

cycle key on- does the fuel pump work? can you hear it pull down as pressure builds..

as you had them do the service, it sounds like you are not going to be the one checking for fuel or spark (both are more technical in nature than changing oil)

Personally if I was in your spot, I would see if a friend with some skills could take a peek.. could just be a harness connector loose etc...

It almost sounds like some header bolts are missing or came loose, like she is sucking too much air! I'm still waiting for them to pick her up! At the moment I don't have anyone who can take a look at her, on a lighter note my PWR CMNDR came in so hopefully I can use it soon!

maybe they knocked a vaccum line off check the lines around the area where they were working ....sounds like a vaccum leak

I'm sure if I looked into it I might find the cause and correct it, but then there is no proof it ever was an issue. I know it will be like pulling teeth to get them to admit they made a mistake, that is why I want to see them take her apart. A friend told me to get another repair shop to look at it before they do, that way they can't tell me somthing it's not. Hopefully the problem is minor but my bike still went down because of it, and now their is damage to my fairings!! This happened at about 7:30am, and I'm still waiting for them to pick her up!!

well if it blew a sparkplug out, it is a pretty distict sound (and pretty loud) a vacuum leak is going to be a steady noise where a plug out is going to sound like a steam engine (pshhhh pshhhhh pshhhh) on a large scale..

the motor will also spin over in an uneven manner.. (is where a bit of experience comes in handy, can hear many failures by sound)

good luck and hope it is not too bad... I would certainly want to be there when they tear it open to see what happened (some shops will go to extremes to dodge responsibility) I might even consider a different shop to do the diagnosis and give the first shop a chance to fix the issue if it is there fault (normally courts require you do that)

Sorry to hear you are having problems - but I will certainly stay on this topic because I want to know what is causing it. Never know when it might happen to me!

Good luck

What was the exact "service" they performed on your bike?
