So a couple buddies of mine have 50's and I've been wanting one for a while for my nephew (really just for me, but I needed an excuse :) )
I'd been hounding craigslist for a while since I'm cheap and don't want to spend too much on a toy. I found this one for $250 but talked him down to $175 for it. He said it had no compression. Took it home and tore it apart. Realized the cam chain bolts were not tight and backed out ruining the cam cover and allowing the cam sprocket to come off and letting the valves float. I thought awesome, I'll only have to replace these bolts and that cover, and I'm golden. Well, we got it all together and it runs, but has a knock in it. I'm thinking some of the aluminum from that case cover that got messed up ruined one of the crank bearings or something. Grrr.. But either way, I bought new plastics/graphics a new tire, gasket kits, etc and after all is said and done I'll have about $300 into it.
Here are some pics. The orange is the before, and in the last pic the plastics are just sitting on it since we have to take it all back apart anyway to split the cases and check out the knock..
For what its worth, its a 2003 XR50 with a BBR 88cc big bore kit, BBR bars, rear spring, fork springs, etc...

Excellent work! Been thinking about doing something similar for my son.

Do it! It's been a lot of fun so far, can't wait to get it finished. These things are cool because unlike the 'busa where everything is $100, everything you could imagine for these bikes is like $20 a piece. I got the plastics and the graphics total for $50 shipped
Its a lot of fun, and I'm learning alot about this little four stroke motor.. :cheerleader:

Good stuff. Your garage is huge. To bad I'm to big for 50s they are a blast.

I'm waaay too big for a 50 too, but that's not gonna stop me!!

My garage is 2000 square feet. Bigger than my house :D
That's why I bought the house, couldn't care less once I saw the garage.

I went over to my buddy kevins house to meet up for a ride, and take his 11zx10 for a spin, and he's got a mini moto bike that's about the size of yours but has a 125cc motor in it, and its setup for a 220lb rider, its crazy, he doubles the big bike jumps with it

Also just realized reading through this that I over sold my garage. It's only 1200 square ft. :banghead:

Looks like a cool little bike!

I know a place you can race it...

My best friend has like 10 acres and he "mows" a racetrack in it every week. Each week is a new course. Its a lot of fun, can't wait to get this thing done and get out there and see what she'll do. So far his is the fastest of the other guys. He's got a bigger carb as well as the 88cc kit. Mine just has the cylinder/piston/an upgraded cam and the exhaust.. I may have to look into a bigger carb to keep up with him.

Just do this and be done with it and him :)
750cc with a turbo in a minibike....

P.S. anyone that might be friends with me on Facebook, please don't mention it on there, I don't want my nephew to know about it until its done... :beerchug:

Thought I'd give you guys an update of the mini-bike. We took it ALL apart yesterday. I mean ALL apart

All the bearings looked/felt good, etc. Found a TON of aluminum shavings inside though from that timing chain cover that got chewed up. Still don't really know what was causing the knocking however the aluminum "filter" which is just a screen was totally clogged so it is possible there was some oil starvation going on as well. I'm going on vacation here basically tomorrow, so no time to get it running before then. I'm just going to take the cases and put them in a parts washer, and we'll put it all back together again sometime next week..
Here are some pics..

So what do you do when you can't get this project done before the 4th of July so your Nephew can learn to ride a bike?

Buy another one!
