it's not a prominent sound... but it is a ticking noise.( do after market exhaust tick? I mean since they are held in place with springs it seems like they would move and make noise? may be this is what I'm hearing))(Wag @ Oct. 02 2007,21:36) You can't hear when the valves need adjusting. Just check them on schedule to be safe.
If you're hearing a lot of noise, it's probably normal. If you ARE hearing a pronounced clicking noise, you could certainly do an early check just to ease your mind.

I'll pull it this weekend and take a look....(CBXRider @ Oct. 02 2007,21:50) In re: "You can't hear when the valves need adjusting."
That's only true if they're too tight. (That's) why checking them is so important. If they're too loose you can hear them, especially at start up but anytime, if they're really out of spec. If they're too tight, they can cause some real damage quick. Silent death. Don't know what you're hearing but upper end tapping is usually, cam chains or valves needing adjustment.
You don't need to pull the engine to check/adjust the valves - just pull off the valve cover.(birdaprey @ Oct. 02 2007,21:58) I'll pull it this weekend and take a look....
that's what I meant to say... "pull the cover off"(omslaw @ Oct. 02 2007,22:12)You don't need to pull the engine to check/adjust the valves - just pull off the valve cover.(birdaprey @ Oct. 02 2007,21:58) I'll pull it this weekend and take a look....
Angled gauges make it a little easier, but I've checked mine 3 times with standard gauges...(Wag @ Oct. 02 2007,22:28) Nope. All you need is a set of angled feeler guages. Not all that difficult.

if you can find the link that would be great...(omslaw @ Oct. 02 2007,22) No specialty tools needed. (on that note, I've pulled my engine twice and did it all with common mechanics tools.)
Jinkster wrote up a really good walk-thru on the valve adjustment. I'll see if I can find the link...
thanks... I'll look over it tomorrow... getting late and I can't think any longer...(omslaw @ Oct. 02 2007,22:34) Here ya go:
