Need absolute DEFINITIVE answer on O.E.M. steering damper fluid

I'm curious what I should do. My stock damper started leaking. Sould I buy one off fleabay or just replace fluid in mine. And if i'm just replacing the fluid is there a rebuild kit for the seals & such? and MOST IMPORTATLY, what type of fluid is used? I've heard gear oil, motor oil, etc. I need definitive answers before I tackle this. Thanks guys ahead of time.
