Need to replace rear tire

I need to replace my rear tire and was wondering if it is better to replace front and rear together?
My front still has okay thread.

It's ok to just replace the rear if the front is still in good shape :beerchug:

Not a requirement, but...
The rubber on a tire wears down and gets slippery over time and with use.
If you can afford it I would do both.
Try it with the old front and new rear and then change out the front, and you will see a real difference.
Nothing handles like a new tire.
IMO

I'm where you're at, Cap. Riding season is approaching and that stocker on the back is looking a bit worse for wear. The front looks nice and round still and the front tread looks fine too. I think just changing the back is an okay way to try new tires without overspending on a set of two.

I haver been cautioned, however, that having uneven wear on front and back can lead to overconfidence with the new tire while the old is not up to the same abilities. You need to be more careful whith one good tire and one half-good tire that you would with two new ones. As a result, one might not be able to fully realize the benefits/faults of a new tire because they are not able to completely explore it's potential.

Regardless, because of economy needs, I plan to just replace the back and see if I notice any improvement. If I do, I'll switch to two of the same next time. If I didn't notice any redeeming qualities in the new back this time, it will be two tires of a different kind on the next change.

Mythos

I don't do all those burn outs that Don does so I'm 3 to 1 with the exception of nails, razors, etc. That rear tire is a magnet.

I usually use two rear tires to one front.

Me too:thumbsup: on my first rear I switched to a bridgestone battlax bt016 as opposed to the 015 and really liked it. then last week I changed both tires to bt016's and I really like them, they heat up good and stick like glue.

ok to mix..otherwise you will be throwing out perfectly good front tires all the time.

Last fall I only replaced my front tire...It has maybe 2000 miles on it now...I just put a new back tire on it last week...it has no miles on it yet as the bikes under some construction...

Change what needs to be changed when it needs to be changed...having two new tires at once is nice...but not a necessity..just make sure you scrub the new tire in well before riding all out...

I have done it both ways...2 rears to 1 front and also 1 rear and 1 front..

I like the later.. 2 new tires every time... I just prefer the feel of new tires if I am doing anything more than just commuting to and from work..

Costs me about $50 more per tire change but I hate the wishy washy feel of a worn front tire as it gets to the last 25% of its life.. figure the $50 is worth it to me.. If I have no plans for road trips or pushing the bike at all... I do not mind running a front tire down to the end..

This was a Front BS I ran for 6500M (not a very pretty sight)

2 rears to 1 front is about right for me. Especially on a torque monster like the Busa.

It's tread not thread.

The tread is the rubber part of the tire that contacts the ground.
The groves molded (or cut) into the tread are called pattern.
Hence a slick tread tire has no pattern.

Check the sides of your front tire for wear not the center. Front tires wear faster on the side. You might be due for replacement.

Read this grasshopper.
