New Busa

First off, great forum...there is definitely a lot of usefull info here.

I just purchased a 2004 Busa with 4500 miles on it. It is an amazing bike as most of you know. My problem is this, while doing some maintenance on it last night....oil change, suspension adjustment, make sure all the bolts were tight as who knows what the last guy did as far as that goes.... Anyhow, the chain seemed pretty loose and it looks like I may have to replace it very shortly as my adjustment room is next to none. While messing with the chain, I pushed and pulled on the rear sprocket only to find that there was a little play in the sprocket drum....is this normal? Or is that supposed to have no play...I would think that no play would be the way to go, but any feedback is much appreciated.

If you are pushing and pulling there may be a small amount of play since the Cush drive should be wearing in. At 4500 miles it shouldn't be too bad though... that drum rides six rubber stoppers (cush drive)and just sort of sits in the grooves.

Thanks for the info! I was just looking through the service manual and saw how it all fit together. The first few hundred miles on a used bike just worry me as I am not sure how everything worked brand new. I guess it is better to be paranoid than sliding down the road wishing I questioned everything on the bike before hand. LOL

Well, I am going to slide this over to the new owners forum so that you can properly introduce yourself - with pics! Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome! I will post pics of the bike as soon as I get it back together. Still waiting on the shop to open up as I got the wrong size oil filter wrench....go figure. I was able to get it one full turn from the filter meeting the engine, but there is just no way I get get that final turn without a tool. LOL Two full turns seems like a lot, but I guess the service manuals spec that out for a reason...

I hand tighten my oil filter and have never had a problem. I put a good coating of oil on the o-ring gasket and spin in on by hand, tightening it is much as I can by hand. No leaks so far.

Welcome!
Ditto on the cush drive thing.

And post some pics when you can... what color did ya get?

It is the black/dark purple one. It had the LED tails on it and polished wheels when I got it. Looks pretty nice. I will definitely post some picks soon.

I did let it run for a bit after I hand tightened it without any leaks. Two full turns seems rather excessive, especially if you want to get it back off. LOL I may just run like this for a while and keep my eye on it. Thanks again.

You should be OK as you have it. Dont go to tight with the filter. But be really carefull with the oil pan drain bolt. Busa's are notorious for having the bolt stripped out of the soft aluminum. Get a good torqe wrench and if you use it on nothing else, use it there. Welcome aboard!

Replace the crush washer every change and only tighten to 16.5 Ft. Lbs.

I did torque the drain bolt to 16.5, I have also heard of people screwing that one up....just reading through these forums...LOL

I went home at lunch and saw that my TRE arrived, so I installed that, put back on the right ferring and rode it back. Wow, what a difference the TRE made. Talk about a much smoother engine. For whatever reason, I was getting all kind of slight hesitation below 4,000RPM when I was just cruising. Once above that, the bike ran great. With this mod on it is a new bike from 1000-4000rpm. I am sure the oil change had something to do with the overall smoothness of the engine, but I am definitely happy with the TRE.

Thanks again for all the input.

Ha ha ha a yeah, Oklahoma roads are not meant for that kind of speed.....and I think the sound of the engine at anything near redline attracts coyotes and other various animals on to the road.
