Went for a good ride on sunday,a good semi abusive ride not out of control but some good ripping. anyway when i got home and shut it down for about ten minutes and restarted it it started smoking real bad burning oil it cleared out and hasnt done it since but im curious whats going on here. i was doing some pretty mean wheelies and have heard that this will cause damage the oil light never lit or nothing and again it hasnt done it since. my bike is an 03 with 3500 miles and has been well maintained i did notice that the oil was filled to the top of the sight glass and drained some out till it was right in the middle. could this have been the problem? im not talking a puff of smoke either i mean a thick cloud. any one know what happened here?

I dunno but it's not a common problem anyway...  Wheelies will do that I think.  Seriously...

wheelies cause oil starvation . They're not good to do for long periods of time .

Do they cause big blue. Maybe , but I doubt it.

For blue smoke to come out the tailpipe,it first has to have been able to enter the cumbustion chamber. Its hard to diagnose these things across the net, you say a "thick cloud" of smoke.... a quarter of a teaspoon can cause a thick cloud.

If it didnt burn any on the way home , and only did it on re-fire, then I would guess you had a valve or valves sticking open for a sec, or maybe a bad seal....but some thing allowed oil into the cumbustion chamber, and it usually comes from above. Oil burning an' consumption can also be caused by bad rings/worn pistons/scored cylinders/etc etc...but those sorts of things dont usually happen to a motor with 3500 miles on it. Then they also push blue all the time.

I guess the other entrance for oil is thru the airbox> via the crank vent , but I'd seriosly doubt that one. Check yer airbox to be sure , yer air filter will show signs of oil.

just a guess..... RSD.
