Oil On Exhaust Pipes

I need help! I was changing my oil filter and got oil on my pipes. How can I get the oil off so that it won't stink while I am riding. I was thinking about using some Goof-Off.
Thanks,
D-

The tip for not getting oil on your pipes (the next time) is to wrap them in tinfoil.

Whatever you use to clean them, make sure the pipes aren't hot enough to "bake" it on, otherwise you might make the problem worse.

wipe it off with a rag, fire her up and go for a ride. It'll burn off before you know it. You'll drive yourself nuts trying to clean it all off. I've not yet done one oil change without getting some oil on the headers, even with foil.

Thanks for the replies. It wasn't that much oil. I had a hard time getting the filter off. It was on so tight (dealer did it). I put it on only hand tight this time.

You had better take that bad boy apart again & tighten the filter before you blow oil all over everything! Hand tight isn't near enough. The manual states that the filter is to be tightened 2 full turns after the gasket contacts the sealing surface. I had to buy the filter wrench that fits over the top to get my filter tight. FYI!!

Yup, Busa filter should be on "WAY TOO TIGHT". At least thats how it felt. But yeah, TWO full turns.

Whenever you change your oil, just take a sheet of aluminum foil and wrap around your pipes, you can even poke a hole in it stearing the draining oil cleverly into your oil pan.

Ok. I am going to make sure that the filter is nice and tight! Thanks for the information. Since this was my first oil and filter change, I was a little worried about getting oil on the pipes, tightening the filter, and tightening the oil screw to tight.
Thanks,

This is true!!!

Thanks for all the advice! I have successfully changed my oil :-) I am no longer considered a rookie :-)

Just take it easy on the sump bolt, that's the one that can ruin your day if it's overtightened and strips the thread.

I've spilt oil on my pipes doing the oil filter change, but as others have already stated, they get so hot that the oil will burn off pretty quickly.

I had a plastic bag blow onto my downpipes on my 1100 years ago. That was bad news, it took a long time to get that off, and the smell...

I back you up on this one. There is no way to get that filter off where it is located without dripping some on the pipes. Once you have everything done just start her up and let her run for a few then take it out and ride it. You will see some nasty smoke for a minute or two don't fret it's just the oil burning off and the smell will stink for a minute but after a couple miles the smell will go away and all will be good.
