Passenger Riding

Alright guys,

I have had several questions answered now by some helpful veteran riders on here and I have another. I have ridden with my wife on the back a handful of times now since buying my 02 Busa a few weeks ago now. I think most of us can agree that riding someone on the back is a horse of a different color than riding by ourselves. We have been doing fine but I want to find something else for her to hold on to other than me. I don't mind her holding onto me but she has trouble holding on to my belt and she likes to hold onto my pockets but I don't think thats too safe. I would like a strap that could be bolted down or bolted to the rear seat that she could hold on to. I remember my uncles ninja when I was a kid having this strap that I could hold on to in front of me. I liked this as opposed to a grab bar thats behind you...It just doesnt seem like a comfortable ride to have your hands holding on behind you. So I am putting the question out there to all of you who have riders on the back, what do you all do and what is out there?

Thanks Again...Love this forum!!!

There are some grab bars that go on each side, they bolt on in place of the rear bar, I forget who makes em, but somebody will post em up for you. There's also a thing called a buddy belt, a belt for each of you that click together, rider belt has handles on the side for passenger too. Only downside is if she goes, you go too:laugh:

The side grab bars sound like the way to go for us. Does anyone remember who makes them or where to buy? I'm gonna Google it now. Thanks again Six pack youve been a real big help. The Power Madd looks like a cheap portable fix as well. Depending on how much and how the grab bars look, thats def another way to go.

Glad I could help, I can't remember who makes em, but I'll search around and get back to you. They bolt to each side of where the grab bar bolts and the bolt holes on the handle are on the end of it, so they point forward or backward. They run parallel to the seat and don't stick out very far. They're metal and have fingure grooves in them. When the passenger is sitting up, their arms will be straight down by their side, looks like they're holding the side of the seat. They where under a $100 last time I saw them too.
I think they would still work better with a backrest, or even the backrest by itself. KV4Hotdog makes a nice one for the Gen1, and I think he said $100.
Even with those handles your wife could get off balance and go backwards, the backrest will really make her more comfortable and secure.
And yeah, it's ugly:laugh: but you only put it on when she's on the back.

If you haven't seen it, here's KVHotdog4's backrest. He said he'll make em without the luggage rack too.

I like the grab rails pictured but as I looked into them some more they actually point backwards. So the passenger still has to reach behind them. Due to the bolt pattern they have to point backwards and cannot be flipped. I was thinking they were going to point forward. Darnit!

Sorry man, didn't look close enough to realize they couldn't be flipped. The backrest is still more secure. Pm Hotdog, see what he can do for you, He obviously has fabrication skills, maybe he could make you a set of custom handles?

Hi Aztec.
I bought a rear carrier from renntec. (which is easily removed by 4 bolts)
I also put a roll bag on the carrier and that gives her lower back some support.
She always holds the handle at the back, she says its easier while accelerating.. then she can hold on to me if she wants.
If I pull away too quick, she uses her decelerator.... a sharp pu:thumbsup:nch in the kidney!

corbin makes a seat and backrest it is pricey but wifey loves it

+1 for sure. I was really hesitant on purchasing the Corbin backrest for the passenger seat, but am so glad I did. My wife can now lean back comfortably and not be afraid of falling off. Also, I know now that if I take off quickly without telling her over the intercom that she will not be lost off the back.

Money well spent if you ask me.

My wife and I ride two up 95% of the time. The corbin is a great seat, but will be thicker than stock and set her higher in the saddle. We tried one but went back to stock because it allowed my wife to be closer to me. How often do you guys ride 2 up or how long have you been riding 2 up? The more you ride the more comfortable you both will be.

We have a corbin passenger seat with the backrest. The wife likes to hold on to the back of the backrest. It keeps her from sliding forward into me.

As a matter of safety, the passenger really should be holding on to something in front of them, which usually means the rider or something attached to the rider. Trying to hold yourself to the fastest bike available under heavy acceleration is nigh impossible for the average passenger even with solid grab points to their rear or their sides. That's the reason that safety folks are always recommending/insisting that passengers hang on to the rider.

Best of luck!

I prefer that the passenger hang on to me,that way I know they are still back there. And they are more likely to lean with you.
