Even though i had a fine compact 9 already?...i just couldn't resist picking this fine (and sorta rare) specimen up last week..from a friend...and board member...who was asking $350 but for $300 even?...i just couldn't pass it up...so?...without further adue?...here's my current...

"Brace Of 9's"

SW1.JPG

I had the Glock G19 with advanced weaponry tritium night sights for quite a few years now but the one on the lower left is a S&W Model 459...in 1988, 803 of'em were made for the FBI under contract with a few (like this one) dolled up for civilian market with fully adjustable, combat grade, rear sight with a serrated front ramp...fully ramped barrel...14rds of Hydra-Shocks in the grip...to me?...this particular "U.S. Manufactured Wonder 9 From Yesteryear" represents what used to be a truely top quality firearm...from back in the days when most (if not all) parts were machined from fordged stock rather than cast from powdered metal..and has that fine machined aura and quality about it...everywhere...and this piece is in fantastic shape for being nearly 2 decades old...as S&W model 459 production stopped in 1988..

I usta be a .45 kinda guy...but since i had three daughters and quit reloading my own years ago?...the 9's are smooth, fast, don't cost much to feed and recoil/size wise?...they'll be excellent choices for handing down to my daughters...and make no mistake...properly stoked 9's will get the job done and are dead nuts reliable...as those full taper cases feed and shuck like nobodys biz...as you can tell?...I'm real happy about this latest aqquisition...can't wait to get the daughters out to the range this thanksgiving weekend!

yepper...i too had a long term love affair with the 1911/.45acp format pistols such as a custom Para P-14 which Errol Lawson (working out of coral springs, fl) helped me put together for myself one weekend...Errol owned "Teal Productions" and did jeweling/machining for pro pistol-smith wayne berquist...and at one point in my life?...i was on Errols "A" list as a tactical competition team shooter..hence why he got me away from glocks (for competition) and helped me assemble a customized P-14 for "Mens Limited Class" (i.e. Iron Sights no Compensator) IPSC/USPSA tactical pistol competitions.

However...while the modern day steel pistols still seem to ne a tad more accurate than their host of polymer glock like counter-parts?...i blame Bill Ruger for much of the mayhem that has taken place...initiating a constant assault on the price point of fine machined pistols by incorporating a constant onslaught of cast parts...even on such critical internal items as sears, hammers and trigger assys...fine for john q. who's going to buy, try, put maybe 2-3 boxes through it and then leave it for dead as a closet dust collector but...for the guy that pushs a few thousand out the tube each year for practice?...the cast parts just don't hold their sand...oh ruger made semi-auto's affordable enough to put two in every driveway but...he sucked the life out of'em doing it with cast internal parts...but the older fully machined pistols (such as this fbi contract S&W 459)hold up a lifetime and Glocks will take 10 lifetimes to wear out..literally hundreds of thousands of rounds.

and for bonus points?..it sure is nice to sit here and fondle such a solid built piece of firearms history in my hands!

and yes...Hydra-Shocks...Silver Tips...or even Golden Sabre...then?...I stagger load my 9's...HP,FMJ,HP,FMJ,HP,FMJ,HP,FMJ,HP,FMJ,HP,FMJ....cause even though it's a 9?...the PMC FMJ will still pop through most typical hard cover choices (such as an opponent hiding behind a car door) and put a sting'in on'em where the 9 HP's usually won't but do a lot more tissue damage than will an FMJ....so?...my 9's are loaded to serve up both.

well sir?...it's probably not recommended to screw with a...former cub scout, boy scout, us marine who enjoys engaging & competeing in everything from long range rifle to shooting in and winning many tactical pistol and 3-gun shooting (rifle/pistol/shotgun) championships...timed...from many different positions with "on-the-move" shots required and HR situational close courses..so?..yeah...i gotta admit...i'm probably one old dog you wouldn't wanna shake off the front porch.

"p.s:thanx for the history lesson on the piece..."

Well?....if ya think that was a cool lesson on the piece?...check this out...this pristine condition S&W Model 459 was the pistol that S&W pitted against all others vying for the gov. contract that wound up putting Beretta's on our troops sides in the 80's..and the ones that lost against the beretta included the Colt SSP (stainless steel), Smith & Wesson 459, FN DA, FN FA, FN High Power, Star M28, Heckler & Koch P 95 and VP 70...however!...while the military made their choice?...the FBI made theirs....and inked S&W with a contract for a run of 803 S&W 459's...and immediately issued them to the field...btw....inner circle pistol gurus of the time were dumbfounded by the militarys choice...i speculate that the training dept. city fathers loved and fell for the "Quick & Easy Field Stripping" feature of the beretta's...and the fbi?...didn't...they bought the S&W459's....over who we all thought would be the hands down winner...H&K.....but they weren't.

yo bill, point in a direction for ammo.

Do you shop on line?
"yo bill, point in a direction for ammo."

"Do you shop on line?"

at times...yes...but sometimes i do even better when local shops buy bulk quantities of "Cases On Sale" and/or?...fantastic deals at monthly gun & knife shows..."cheaper than dirt" usually has some pretty good deals (at times) as well...

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ammo.asp

but i don't buy anything less than 1,000rd cases as "buy the box" prices sux.

"Black Hills" is a great outfit as well...and they have a gov contract for once fired brass for what they call "Remanufactured Ammo"....which is still great practice fodder for about 1/2 the price of new shid...and far better than the "copper plated bullet/steel case coated crap" from outfits like "Wolf Ammo".

just a few years back?...a case of new pmc 115gr fmj 9mm luger ran me $117 for 1,000rds..but now because of the wars?.....the price of ammo has just about doubled...recently.

Hope that helps and L8R, Bill.
