The only thing I could think off was maybe sand down say 400, then move to 600-1000. Then get a heat gun and slighly move it back and forth to smooth it out....but then again never tried it....it could work I guess....
I think a lot of folks that have trimmed the undertail have used a Dremel to make it smooth. Not sure how long it took or what grit attachment they used, but they have seemed satisfied. I was lazy and wanted a different look and got an aftermarket undertail.
