Possible new Stablemate 87 Hurricane (Project Bike)

Came across an 87 1000 Hurricane that has been im-properly stored for 5 years. The bike is complete and also has a second parts bike that comes with it. The second bike is no better off than the first one. Both will need a lot of TLC to get back on the road again. But I am considering this. How easy will parts be to come by? Are there a good number of parts that interchange with other models? For instance I read where there is 17" front wheel conversion.

The bike has 37K on it. I seem to find that there is a cam chain tensioner problem. Sitting for 5 years I begin to think about engine teardown and rebuild. How hard or easy, and how costly?

Another example the front fork tubes are rusty, probably past spec, so is this an easy replacement item? I know I will need to replace all rubber etc. It was also stored with a half tank of gas, so that is like a sludged up pile of jello in the tank now. So that will need attention.

To me this is like the first Super Sport bike that kind of stareted it all and I respect what it has for specs. She puts down some respectable numbers even by today's standards. In 87 nothing could touch it.

It will make for a great resto project, but I am not interested in breaking my bank or taking me months to track down little things like rubbers etc.

So do we have any Honda guys here that can help steer me into or away from this bike?

I would think you could find anything you needed. Sounds like a great take your time project to me.

Hey man that was my last bike before my busa.I stopped riding for a good while until I rode my son inlaw's gsxr 1000 and had to get back in the saddle again, bought a used 88 Hurricane that I never heard run with the idea of restoring it.I had it tuned rode it for about a year broke the chain from the crank to the cam broke had it fixed at the tune of $800 rode for another year and same thing again decided not to repair. You can still find most parts for them at salvage yards used or new online.Good bike and suprisingly powerful it will get you a buck and half tuned right if you wanna ride that fast.I guess my riding style was alittle too hard on it hence the busa it will take it.The cam chain noise is normal for these bikes especially til they warm up,not trying to steer you away from it mine just had some issues but could still hang with the liter bikes til they go top end on you, Good old school bike and fun to ride and it's heavy doesn't fall into the corners too good.I turned 60 last yr so I'm sure you've got alot of riding yrs left. Be safe out there.
