I'm going to powder coat a bunch of bits gold this winter.

Obviously I can't give you the business as much as I might like to.

I don't know squat about powder coating.

Any tips for parts preparation, supplier selection, after coating care, coating vs anodizing?

Powder coating can be very durable. It will add more weight than paint (3-5 lbs.?). Welding on powder coated surfaces is a real drag. It tends to catch on fire! It is impossible to do touch up work on if (when) it chips. Anodizing does not add any weight that I know of (also impossible to touch up). The finish of your piece before you start will dictate how the final product looks. I like to have things professionally polished before having them anodized, or chromed.

can you put any kind of clearcoat or coating over polished stuff so you don't have to buff it all the time? and can you anodize over polished stuff? how does anodizing work?

thanks maniac

I don't know. Try it. The only thing that I might worry about is the clear coat discoloring. I've seen aluminum engine parts turn to a real ugly brown after being exposed to heat. Anodized parts seem to hold up pretty good even with moderate heat. Talk to who ever is doing the work for you.
