Predictions for the 2005 model year

About a month ago, I watched a top fuel dragster do a 4.6 sec/303 MPH quarter mile. Years ago, common accepted wisdom was that this would be impossible, un-natural, against the laws of nature, blah, blah, blah....

What are some serious predictions for bikes like the Busa/ZX-12/Blackbird for year 2005 models, assuming no meddling regulations, insurance companies or politicians ?

Do you think anyone cares about what's gonna happen in 5years? :) that's along time from now, no one can predict what's gonna happen in 5 years with the bikes. But until then I'm gonna have fun riding my busa in the year 2000 :)

You'll have 322 RWHP, GPS tracking and calibration of instruments, "Rain away" sonic shielding, and Internet access (hopefully not cable).

Albert Einstein proved years ago that a "car" could not exceed 150 mph, or eclipse 9.99 E.T. in the ¼.

I want serious replies from guys who know some of the goodies that are there today and being held back, or in the works.

Sorry turbo

Five years is a long way out there. I would imagine electronics would have improved dramatically. Horsepower will keep marching up there, along with a more usable powerband. Aerodynamics, Hmm. I think you'll see more done in this area as well. Suzuki really opened the door here. Screw conventional designs and make something that works.

The big question is the no meddling regulations, insurance companies or politicians.

OK serious poop.

Extensions of existing or nascent technology only:

Ultimately sticky tires made of hydraulically hyper-compressed Elmer's glue.

Seat skins incorporating Pampers one-way plastic membranes so that when you piss your pants wheelying off a blind hill at night, you stay dry and happy.

Closed 360 degree exhaust-intake-exhaust-intake systems so you can ride for the rest of life on a pint of fuel.

Plasma video tank screens that allow you to see into the future so you can enjoy your destination while you're still riding to it.

More later, gotta grab some old '50s Mechanix Illustrated mags for inspiration.

Really, the motorcycle hasn't changed in any fundamental way since it was invented.

It will only be faster, quicker, more nimble...and by the same proportion that it is faster, quicker and more nimble than it was 5 years ago.

i.e. not much.

As technology advances, the incremental gains become increasingly small. This is true of all scientific disciplines.

The frequency of such earth shakers as computers, nuclear energy, and flight is slowing.

What's left to blow our minds? Time travel, teleportation, immortality, alien contact and factory decals that peel off frames more easily.

That's about it.

Arrrrrgh, dialed it too far back.

This damn English bike just blew the primary chain and the magneto burned the hair off my calves.

But man I love these ape hangers and the raked springer front end kicks ass!

Like, can you guys bring those Busas back here, because the best anyone here can do in the quarter is 13.20.

Do you copy?

poop mother poop, this Matchless doesn't have a time travel switch under the seat...

Help me....help me...

Hey don't bother I found a joint in my vest.

OK Pete this is what you need to do.

Find Falconcop. OK? He should only be about three feet tall, so he might be a little hard to recognize. Just look for the kid every one is beating up. I'm working on my satellite imagery to see if I can pin point his location.

BTW, start buying Microsoft stock when it come out.

without regulations, I think we will
see 200hp at the crank. If it is like the increase of the hayabusa has made this 99 then I would guess 240 at the crank. I also think the big bikes will weigh around the 400lbs. mark.

240 crank hp and 400 dry pounds will deliver mid 8s in the hands of a good driver.

And if the aerodynamicsand chassis are great...220 mph.

In addition to having the the opportunity to shoot my daughters' suitors on sight at the front door, this is is a good reason to live longer and stay in shape.

Turbo...you are conspicuously absent from this learned debate, which you yourself began.

Has The Playpen answered your question, or would you prefer to submit your question to Cycle World?

They care a lot over there.

The Hayabusa may be showing the way to the future. A very small percentage of motorcycle buyers go after the bikes that are the fastest and most powerful, and only a small percentage of those regularly ride their fast and powerful bikes to the limits.

The magic of the Hayabusa is that its a comfortable, smooth, quiet, easy to ride bike that happens to be the fastest and most powerful. I think a lot of motorcyclists who would shy away from sport bikes (crotch rockets) will like the Hayabusa. So by 2005 their will be fewer hard edged bikes that have limited appeal and more bikes like the Hayabusa - comfortable, easy to ride, powerful, and refined.
Just a prediction.

Aluminum chassis,swingarm,gas tank
Carbon fiber everywhere of course... including bodywork.
Wing on back to create necessary downforce.
A miniature parachute.
300mph top speed.
6 1/2sec 1/4's.
300mm back tire.
And somehow reliable, and stealth...with exhaust supersilencers.
This would be nice for 15grand.

One of the main advancements we will see is the elimination of reciprocating mass
through the elimination of camshafts and their resulting drives. This will be
accomplished through the development of pneumatic or electronic solenoids that will
open the valves from ECU / E-prom maps allowing for the user to select "desired
power curves" at will. Looking at a tough race? Just dial it up 50 HP.
Congratulations to FC on his nomination to resident speedo error tester. I don't think
their is a a better member for the job. I believe 1300cc will easily make 250+HP for
the street by 2005. Lets hope were around to ride these things. Bussa' willing-

Interesting thread! I like to follow technology (it's my job), and I think there will be much more on-board electronics in vehicles.

GPS, someone laughed at above, is almost in vehicles now. I found a product the other day, a 1 ounce tiny GPS unit that could be put in a vehicle or even (get this) model airplane! The price was reasonable too. In five years expect many cars to have GPS, and maybe some bikes, but probably first on tourer bikes. Honda VFR has some trick electonics now - maybe they will be first with GPS??

With performance changes, expect the first changes to be the CHEAP ones. The reason our bikes have ram air and not turbos is that ram-air is cheap! A couple of bits of plastic tube. And it sort-of works.

They will add more cheap stuff, I have toyed myself with the idea of ACTIVE ram-air, with variable size scoops that open or close the mouth depending on road speed. This would give lots more power at low speed, but not cause leanness/air drag at high speed. I can bet the bike makers have thought of it too... Still cheap, might work?? Wouldn't it sell some bikes though...

I like the idea of active aerodynamics too. Imagine a tilt spoiler, nose or tail, that can adjust for different speeds. No real new technology or material development needed, just some research time...

Active suspension, a computer controlled valve in the forks/rear that compensates for temp, or gives a dash mounted button adjuster?? What about auto suspension? Makes is cushy soft on a bumpy country road, but can detect hard track use and firm it up. Heck, why not just get the computer to firm it just for that second of hard braking...

So you can guess my prediction... :) Much more of the "hook a computer up to it" stuff, we have the technology now, and they WILL make it.

Sorry to ramble on, but if you want to know my favourite invention (this one might take a few years) I like the idea of active spoilers on the front wheel/fairing, that detect when the bike is at full lean, and change the downforce for THAT SIDE to actively push the tyre sideways (so push it DOWN onto the road) to increase traction. We will probably be riding this stuff before Indy car or F1 legalise it for race use! Don't you love bikes??
