Pullin the Plastics... How quick are you?

I used to pull the plastics off the Gen I in probly 5 minutes or less per side and get them back on just as quick.

I have had the Gen II off about 3 times now and every time I HATE IT! Hours of fiddling, couple small broken tabs, never back exactly as before ... You know ... :banghead:

I have read the pinned topic on this a couple times and still eeeeeeeeeeaaaaaargggggg!

How quick are U? Any new tricks?

You are so correct! The Gen 1 comes apart in ~5 minutes. With the Gen 2 after getting over the (pull on the nose section so hard you think your ripping it apart, I can have her down in about 20 minutes. the biggest trick that I have found (for me) is to drop both the left and right fairings as one unit from the nose. I have a soft blanket under the bike and the equal weight of both sides make releasing from the nose a lot easier. I can then rotate both the right and left fairing under the bike as a single piece if I want, or rotate it around so I can separate the bottom portion.

With the nose, I found that once all the side fairing bolts are loose and I have released the nose from the fairing stay, a quick pop to the nose (not a hard pop) just a pop slightly up and forward releases the weird plastic clips.

I recently saw a mod done where a Gen 2 motor and tranny was put in a Gen 1 and they remounted their Gen1 body (Modified plastic). Should that day come, I will mount a Gen1 body to my Gen 2 and get away from this Mickey Mouse set up Suzuki did.

I know, without pics this is not very descriptive. PM me is you want and I will get you my phone and we can talk (if you need).

Take care...

Last time I pulled just the right side to do an oil change and it only took about 10 mins but about twice as long to get it back together. It gets faster every time.

Once you understand how they come apart, you can do it in under 10-minutes pretty easy... :beerchug:

I've only done it once.

I watched Blanca's video 5 times during it.
So, probably 40 minutes to pull the right side fairing.

Putting it back on was about an hour and a half.
Long story short, they (the dealership) bent one of my pins because when they did my oil change the last time, the pin didn't seat correctly and they just left it, so it was bent and I had to figure out a way to straighten it while getting it in correctly. I used a string and pulled on it. Eventually I'll have to replace that piece.

Ive had my plastics off of my 08 so many times I can do it blind folded in about 15 minutes now. ( just the left and right fairings) still have some trouble with the upper fairing. The 1st few times I removed them it took me and my son over an hour to get them off. One trick I learned is when ya put them back on use some silicone grease or even a little bit of antisieze and this will help the tabs slide in and out easier the next time you take them off.

A mantra that was drilled into our minds while on deployment was: slow is smooth. and smooth is safe. To this day, it still aplies...even when removing fairings. :beerchug:

Oil change is zero minutes. Mod the fairing and you are good to go!

Dr. E,
Very, very interested! Please do tell how this most fantabulous mod is done :cheerleader:

ya very nice. Nice sweater you have on too.

Takes me 30 minutes after ~6x removed. Never busted anything but have had to tear stuff back off to get the plastic on correctly.

I'm interested to but not sure if filter will come out the fairing hole with Brocks header ?
Still think it would have to go down and out ?

The only time I ever had a problem with it was when I first did it, especially with it being my first bike and all. After I saw how everything fit together, it only takes a couple of minutes. I haven't broken anything yet and I honestly don't see how anyone could ???

Was nothing more then looking at the fairing and determining how much room I needed for my hand. The aftermarket headers I believe are going to be an issue as they do present a position problem.

Marked the fairing with a grease pencil, trimmed the panel to shape (trying to maintain some semblance of factory curve), smoothed to finish and that was when I had the bike painted.

I read to many horror stories about how bad changing the oil was and opted for an alternative route.
