Question about helmet fit

I just got a new Shoei Z2 in XXL 7 7/8- 8 to replace my Shoei RFR same size. This helmet is much more modern and shaped distinctively different. It fits much tighter on my face yet doesnt seem uncomfortable. My question is how do your helmets fit you. Is there a rule of thumb I should be following ? Thanks in advance people .

I read on either the Shoei or Arai site that most people wear a helmet that's at least 1 size too large. It should be very snug, but no pressure points (especially around the temples).

Your head should contact as much of the padded surfaces as possible. If there are gaps between your cheeks and the pads, get bigger pads (if possible). If the pads don't make good contact along your forehead/temples, then the helmet may not be the correct size.

With the helmet on, but with the strap NOT attached, if you take both hands on either side of the helmet, and twist (keeping your head straight), the helment should not twist very much.

Putting the helmet on and taking it off should require some effort. If it pops on/off, it's probably too big.

These are just guidelines, but hopefully they've helped.

Every head is shaped a little different. I found that
Shoei fits my head the best, but I do get a hot spot on my forhead after about 2 hrs.

I fit customers with helmets everyday. Most want to by a helmet that fits there face (cheek pads feel tight) instead of there heads. Cheek pads are designed to break in according to the wearers face keeping that contact on the face. Its the crown of your head the helmet should fit.

The Advice I heard on this is that when you put on your helmet it should be plenty snug, it will break into your head a bit.  When it is on, if you grab the chin bar and wiggle it around you should feel your skin on your face and across your head move with it,  if you can move it much around your head without pushing your skin around a bit it's probably too big.  Too small is easy, does it hurt?  Give you headaches? then it is too small.

Keep in mind that different models of helmets even from the same Manufacturer can have pretty disimilar shapes.  Especially true between Shoei and Arai. I wear a Medium Quantum or Astral Arai, and a Large Shoei RF-900, go figure. Cost me about $400 to figure that one out, wife has a nice helmet now though...

Snug but not uncomfortable or you'll never want to wear it.
Shoei fits me real nice. Frigging HJC feels like it's pushing my eyesockets back into my head. Both are size XL. Anyone want to buy a Yates replica HJC?

I use the Shoei Z2 Viking (scares the hell out of Saxon peasants) in blue (kinda matches my '04 blue/silver). Been using it for about 5 months and it still fits snugly in the head and face, but has become very comfortable. I was a little concerned when I first started riding with it because it hurt my head on both the left and right sides, high above the temples. But the thing must have molded to my head, or my head molded to it. But what I really like about the Z2 is the extra visibility the wide opening gives me when I have to "check my six".
