At least one Hayabusa is expected to race this weekend in the 24-hour Willow Springs 2000 endurance race sanctioned by WERA. The track is about 75 miles north of Los Angeles.
According to the track flyer, Team Emgo Valvoline Susuki will race a Hayabusa. Admission is $20 and includes overnight camping. Race starts noon Saturday, Sept. 25 and ends at noon Sunday. Day, and night, practice runs until 11pm Friday. There's live music Saturday night in case you get bored.
If you're not familiar with Willow Springs, it's a great 2.5 mile track on a desert hillside with no trees to obscure the view (or shade you from the sun). Virtually the entire track is visible and about 3/4 of the perimeter is accessible for viewing. It's gonna be hot this weekend with temps near 100 and nights down around 50 so be prepared.
The no-brainer route is north on the Antelope Valley (14) freeway to Rosamond Blvd, then west (left) six miles. A lot more fun is San Francisquito Canyon out of Santa Clarita to near Elizabeth lake (left at first two intersections, then right at the third toward Quartz Hill), then over a ridge and down into the Antelope Valley. At Ave D (second stop sign) go right to next intersection and take 90th St north (left) to Rosamond Blvd, then a mile right to the track, which you'll be seeing long before that.
