I see the occassional mods done for radar detectors (hard wiring, etc.). Why not just mount a cordless radar detector (Escort) to the underside of your windscreen and you're done.

Anybody using one? Experiences?

I would think you could still use a remote helmet indicator if preferred.

Ok, my wife used to be the VP for Marketing for one of the top radar detector manufactors. The cordless detectors are not very good. The batteries don't last long and the detection range is not a good as a wired unit. If you are going to the trouble, hardwire one in. There is an extra plug in the nose of your bike that is not used but is 12v and gnd. Just my $.02

Thanks Don, but how long is not long?

My dad has a cordless Escort model in his car and it seems to work just as well as my hardwired Escort.

If you're at liberty, what "top radar" company did she work for? Did they sell any cordless models?

A friend of mine has the cordless Escort S2 and I have the X50 hard wired. The S2 batteries don't last worth a hoot. The alkaline batteries lasted just a few hours (less than 10) not worth the extra expense and hassle of carrying and changing the batteries. He was very disappointed so he ordered the hardwire cord for it. The S2 isn't much smaller than the X50. If the batteries lasted like the original Escort Solo and it was as small as the old unit it would definitly be the way to go. Not so with the S2.

Yeah, my dad has the original Escort Solo. Looks like they cheapened up on the S2.

But how long are they lasting w/ the S2? Are they lasting a day's ride? I have an abundant supply of rechargable batteries, so...

Hard Wire

+3 Hard wired..... No comparison to battery! many factors to consider when using a battery. Like, temp, kind of battery, what your display is set to, etc... Been there done that!

Hard Wire
How did you mount that to the windscreen? I'd love to mount my detector there but I'm uneasy with a suction-cup or two holding that on.

Also, I noticed your toll tag (I'll assume your in the DFW area)... mine does not work at all and I mounted mine in the same spot and position. Are you having any luck getting picked up at the booths?

I had both the Escort S2 and the X50, took the S2 back after trying it for 1 weekend...nice unit but just didnt have enough signal strngth for me. Also, the LCD screen on the S2 was almost impossible to read in daylight hours. Now I have an X-50 with the blue led's and have no complaints at all, and in bright daylight I can still see the readout just fine. I liked the unit so much, I got an X-50 for my mother BMW Z3...she has a lead foot and feels she is justified to drive to the shopping mall as fast as she wants...lol

The mount is from Legal Speeding.  I looked on the Web page and did not find it.  I bought at the Motorcycle show in Dallas 3 Years ago.

The mount is bolted to the screen in three places, then a velcro strap hold the Escort 7500 into place.  Works Great.

It was a little un-nearving to make the holes in the screen, Measure three times, Measure again, then heat up a copper wire, #14 from a piece of Romex.  Punch it through, Don't try to drill, the plastic will splinter, or the bit will walk.

I used to use the suction cups also, but I put velcro on the bottom of the Escort, and the top of the intrument cluster, where the Toll Tag is.  Between the suction cups and the Velcro, it kinda Wedged itself in to position, and with the Velcro was pretty stable.

The Toll Tags Works, I guess?  No really, I can go through the entrance ramp booths and it lights green.  On 190, I guess it works I have had no tickets mailed to me yet!

If your shield has a metal tint, it wont work. If you remember, when you got your toll tag, they give you a metal sleeve to keep it in if your not using it so it wont pick it up when your going through the tag area. IE, in your briefcase.

Gotta leave the name out, sorry. I asked she said it would be better to not say. They did; however, do R & D on a couple of cordless models. After it was all said and done, they decided that cordless was not going to be a profitable venture.

Any phone cord with RJ11 connector good for hardwiring Escort radars. You dont have to buy a cord for each vehicle.
two center contacts if I remember correctly.

why even consded cordless models when you have unlimited and free power supply from the vehicle electric system...

Have you tried to honk your horn when using extra plug in the nose? I have my shift light powered through it and when I honk the horn it'll kick the shiftlight on and off.

I have escort solo2 and have nothing but praise for it. You didn't say what brand you were talking about so i'll assume it was another. Range is great on mine and batteries last at least a month, but it really depends on your usuage. Now will i say it is better than hardwired, no. But it sure is convenient and has saved my tail on many occasions

Yup, I had my Raptor shift light powered by that plug on my 04. Haven't put a shift light on the 05 yet, not sure if I am going to.
