How about instead of a specific item, a gift certificate to one of the board sponsors or just one of the Visa cards with a specific amount on it. I think that might be more appealing to a wider range of members.

Don's idea is excellent. I think what ails some of the past "projects" is what appears to be a lot of enthusiasm over something is sometimes followed by not enough participation.
