After searching for a while and trying different things, I decided to try something new. I want to be able to use a Renthal style handlebar setup when I’m riding long range or commuting to work and be able to swap back to the stock, sportier style riding position when needed.
I got on EBay and found a stock upper cover for $25. I’m planning on removing the handlebar clamps completely and using the four mounting holes for the cover to secure risers to it. The mounting bolts will serve the purpose of holding the risers and secure the cover as well.
OEM upper cover
The clamp area is cut off since they won’t be used. I could have left them on and used this cover to serve both riding situations but I didn’t want empty handlebar clamps there for aesthetic reasons.
The clamp bolts thread into the cover so these areas will have to be welded and smoothed out. The cover is a cast aluminum but I can TIG weld it and not have to worry about strength.
I will be reinforcing the back side of the cover with aluminum for added strength. It’s probably not needed but I feel better knowing there’s more material there.
