Self-Made Rocket Explodes Strapped to Michigan Man's Back

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- Police say an Independence Township man suffered 2nd degrees burns and possible eye damage after a self-made rocket backpack exploded while he was sledding.
According to authorities, a 62-year-old man combined gunpowder, heads from matches and gasoline in a motorcycle muffler and pipe and strapped it to his back prior to sledding at an annual party at his home. After the device was lit, it exploded during the downhill ride.
Police responded to the incident around 7:30 p.m Saturday. No one else was injured and police believe alcohol played a role in the accident. No charges have been filed, however, police say the investigation remains open.
