RS-3 Repack Question

While disassembling my RS-3’s for a repack on my recently acquired ‘05, I found the inner baffle to be wrapped in steel mesh which is completely carbonized. The packing was really nasty as well. My question is this - Can I just remove the steel mesh and repack with the supplied packing in the repack kit? I couldn’t find replacement mesh on the Yoshi site, nor could I find any info on it.
Thanks.

Yep, just clean off the center perforated tube, and wrap it in new exhaust packing material.
The are a few kinds of packing and substitutes as as well.
Don't worry about it, it'll be fine.

You can ask Yoshimura directly sales@yoshimura-rd.com They responded right away to all my queries and were very helpful. Not all parts are listed on their website so the mesh might be available. Yea probably won't be able to tell diff without it but there's a reason it's there in the first place. I'd check with Yoshi to make sure it's ok without the mesh if you are going that route.

The 'mesh' keeps the packing material directly off of the perforated metal center tube, which helps it to last longer.
Steel wool can also be used in this application.
All mufflers with packing need repacked at some point.
Most would be susprised at just how low the recommender hours are between repacking.
The packing is there mainly to lower noise, and you can notice the deep tone of a new or newly repacked muffler, vs a louder and more raspy tone as the packing 'wears' aka burns off.
