Rusted Tank

Guys, I need your advice or help. I have a 99 copper/silver colored busa which I bought at the beginning of this year. I haven't been able to ride for the past 5 weeks since a bubble developed in the gas tank and it was getting painted. The painter said the bubble kept developing and he would have to restart all over again every time he was ready to paint. After I got it back a big leak developed so I took it off and found out it was a rusted pinsize hole. I tried to get some Jb weld which of course didn't work. So i sent it woff to the welder. He just told me an hour ago the metal is to thin and rust has developed all over the inside of the tank which i was suspecting as soon as the bubble developed. But now I can't ride until I get a good fix or replace it.

I understand I can only fit a 99 or 00 tank without having to change fuel pumps. So I don't know if I should try and get a used tank. There's a guy around here that gets them for $660 painted and everything but I don't have a way or believe he'll get a new tank so I'm kind of sketchy. Ron Auers microfiche says they are discontinued.
Should I go with a carbon gas tank It quite exepnsive and the lady at Catalyst composites told me I would loose the fuel level sender and I don't think I could use the stock gas cap. A carbon tank would look awesome but it's a lot of dough. Any body dealt with yoyodyne cf tanks or with catalyst composites? Any advice/help will be greatly appreciated. I went for the used gleaming bike from a "trustworthy" person with the goodies instead of getting a new oneand spending on the goodies.

Just look on ebay you should find one easily. Or have your tank blown out and coated on the inside.

Yeah, but that dog gone coating comes loose at times and creats a bigger mess than before.
"I" would spring for a new tank.
I coated a car tank once after having a bung welded in. Next year I was unclogging my fuel filters.
BUNCHES and BUNCHES of coating.
Pissed me off.

But,
Maybe the coating wasn't done properly.

Just MY 2 cents

That coating is junk and if the tank is as bad as you say it is, it'll just keep rotting out. Any band-aid repair you throw at it will be short term.

I'm still trying to figure out how your tank rusted out on such a new bike. I can see if it was a bike from the 70's that sat for most its life with contaminated gas but a '99 is ridiculous.

Sounds like you just have a lemon of a tank and odds of getting a used one with rust are next to none. I'd get one off Ebay, there are never any shortages of tanks there. Luckily when a squid totals a bike the tank often remains untouched.

I would also assume the newer tanks must fit your bike and as long as it comes with the fuel pump and the price is right why not go for a newer one?

If you want a brand new tank, then check some local dealers. By law a vehicle manufacturer must offer replacement parts for 10 years. Ron Ayers may just be wrong. If they really are NLA, then Suzuki must be substituting the newer tanks, which is a gray area since you now have to buy a fuel pump and repaint it at your expense.

if you do decide to coat it, i would suggest letting the tank sit with a mixture of Muratic acid and water. This will eat any rust in there, Just make sure you dont get it on you or any other parts of the bike. I just removed the pump from the bottom and covered the hole with duct tape. Keep in well ventelated area as well.

Like the others though, I would not suggest doing the coating at all. I did it on my GSXR 750 and it didnt last more then a couple of months, Then I just traded it in for the busa.

Thanks guys. As for the coating i know its crap so I won't do it. Do any of you think racing fuel sitting in there for a while could have caused it? I ahven't been able to varify this but it could be tha cause. The las t owner said he didn't race it or anything but I know he was going to get a longer swingarm. The bike wasn't lowered in the front and just 1' in the back. So maybe he went street racing a few times abd maybe on those times he used racing fuel. I've been told VP fuel can be somewhat corrosive.
