Saddlebag Question

I am wanting a set of saddlebags (soft, throw-on) for my '04. WHo is using what out there and what are your impressions?
I am mostly concerned about clearing the pipes.

what year you got? If you have 99-00 with the aluminum subframe, you may want to change over to the 01-newer steel sub-frame to avoid the subframe cracking issue from the added weight.

You should do a search... This has been discussed a thousand times...

I clicked the links for both the Oxford and Tourmaster bags and was surprised that you have to use the supplied raincover in wet weather. I have an old sissybar mounted bag that doubles as a backpack, and holds a workweek's worth of clothes. It has two side pockets that can hold a pair of shoes each.

When I bought it the salesman assured me it was rainproof because he had closed one up and put a garden hose on it for a long time and it didn't leak........as delivered, no raincover needed. And he was right. I got caught in heavy rain numerous times and the stuff inside stayed dry. I wouldn't settle for anything less if I were you.

The TourMaster saddle bag material is rain proof, but the zippers aren't water tight, so that's where it'll leak (if it does).

ANYBODY HAD PAINT DAMAGE FROM SOFT BAGS ? FROM HIGH SPEED TOURING ? OR THEY FIT TIGHT?

I have the Tourmaster Cortech Sport Saddlebags, Oxford Tailbag, and Joe Rocket Tankbag. I also have Tourmaster Saddlebags and Tank bag for the Harley.

So far they work pretty well. I don't like the rain covers and simply plastic bag everything when packing. The stuff in the saddlebags and tailbag aren't generally needed during a ride anyway. I have a clear cover for the tankbag though.

I don't like the Oxford much. After a year of use, the disconnect zipper has failed and the hard interior plastic has warped. There is a lot of room and it seems to be well made other than that but for $100 I expected it to be more sturdy.

With the saddle bags mounted, the rain covers don't really cover the bags well and I ripped the seam on one of them trying to make sure they were secure. They're very flimsy feeling and I would have rather had a waterproof bag liner than a cover.

The bags are pretty tight but I've put some shelf paper under the bags since if a stone got lodged in there, it'd put some deep gouges into the body work.

I have 3,000 miles on them with no damage on my paint. Unfortunately my wife had them on her bike for a 4,000 mile trip and they marred up the paint on her Aprilia.

I think that if they're used the right way, you could probably use any saddlebags. Don't depend on the bags to protect your gear and paint. That's something only you can do right.
