Safety Wiring the Busa

Ok, so I have not seen a complete thread on this stuff and since I networked with a few of the members and carried out at least the initial stuff here is what I have done to mine, thus far, in preparation for a trip to Barber Motorsports Park. I bought some .032 safety wire, and the needed pliers from Motorcycle Super Store and some other items from various sources... here goes:

The oil drain plug. I bought a Lockhart Phillips aluminum plug that was pre-drilled (for safety wire) for $3 on Ebay. All of the GSXRs have the same plug so if faced with a purchase just order the one that fits those and your good to go! I judiciously drilled a small hole in the shroud that half circum surrounds the plug, it was a tight fit but after a few tries my aircraft mechanic son 'signed off on the wire up'.

Next was the oil filler plug. Its plastic (easy drill job) and there is a nifty little hole that is already in place in the frame. I used it (the frame hole) and again very carefully drilled a hole in the filler cap and here is a blurry pic of that mod:

From there, moved on to the oil filter. The guy holding this track class requires that the filter be wired so I took a suitable sized hose clamp and bound it on to the filter. There is, as can be seen in the pic, a nifty little boss on the engine that is great to wire up to so I used it.

Finally, and this will be the last thing I wire up for this track day, is the side stand kill switch. Yep, I had to do that too since the side stand has to be removed before going onto the track so here is what I did. Took off the switch and very carefully drilled a small hole in the rim of the plunger and also drilled a hole for the wire in the bolt that secures the switch to the side stand mounting boss. From there, remount it all, just twist up the wire until the plunger is depressed far enough to over ride the engine kill point and you can then run without even having the side stand mounted.

Ok, so more to come as I have to unplug some wires to either disable or otherwise switch on and off all of the bike's lighting... and if I dont find a post on how that works I'll post it too.Either way, this part of the .Org dont seem too busy so it needed a good post eh?

Randy, you might need to see if they will require replacing the Anti-freeze... also, you might want to use painters tape (for easy removal) and then unplug the bulb connectors... Mirror blockoffs could come in handy as well.

Being as I am fairly close to VIR, I may have to give NESBA a serious look! You inspire me Brotha!

Could you pull a single fuse to kill the lights

just look at the wirring on the left side near the fuse block. There's a white connector... just disconnect it... it disconnects the front lights... all of them... this is the same connector you have to disconnect to remove the nose fairing from the bike. To get to this you just need to remove the two screws and pop out the little plastic pop rivet holding the inside left cover.

Water Wetter went in two days ago bro and mirror block offs are poised for installation!
Even took the time to get the 'tapioca' out of the bottom of the reservoir - learned of that little phenomenon over at another thread in our wonderful org and even though I had flushed the system I went back out in the garage after reading that thread and yep, white paste all in the bottom of the reservoir!

Mirror blocks offs; got them, engraved with kanji, for $20 off of ebay. I am gonna spray em black!

I plan to join Sport Bike Track Time in January and at least hit the local circuits here; Jennings, Talladega and Barber once each in '08 - that is provided that me and the bike survive this upcoming class at Barber... Of all the track leasing organizations SBTT seem to have the largest selection and most dates.

Far as the electrical piece thanks for the heads up guys. The rear blinkers have to be removed and I figured I could find a connector on each end that would take the lighting out in one swipe.

On another track day note; there is an outfit out in CA, Empire Tape Company, that sells black (and every other conceivable color and pattern) masking tape. Yep, I got a roll of black on the way, cant have that ugly blue painters tape on my cranberry and black baby!

Sorry for the long posts, like I said I did not see anything anywhere else here and thought I might save someone some time.

10-4!

Thats the type of fix I want to find, thanks!

as for the tape you got you may want to get some of the stickyness off by taking a length and sticking it to a pair of jeans a few times. It's helps alot in making it less sticky... (easier to get off later and no residue). keep the rubber side down and enjoy yourself out there!
