Shifting help

Never Forgotten
I have a couple of questions.

This is my 7th bike. Its a Busa 04 Black/Purple, 300miles. Its a week old. Ive had a GPz650or550 (i cant remember), a Magna 750, A honda 125, A custom 900, Honda 450 NightHawk etc... not in that order.

1. Seems to idle a little rough.

2. I cant seem to figure out when to shift. It seems to like 4000-5000rpm all the time, maybe a little higher and higher speeds. Can you guys suggest what rpm/mph to shift for commuting and having fun, like when a corvette starts to think its fast?

3. When I am doing 80+mph and I give it some gas, the engine seems to lag a bit or at least it sounds like it. Any tips?

4. When driving thru a downtown area (heavy traffic) in first or 2nd it seems to "chug-chug" at around 10-20 mph.

I really appreciate this site. Ive read a lot of the posts and you guys are the best. I love this bike. Its a keeper.

Mike

you should wait till you have at least 1000 miles till you really bring thr rpms up
after you have about 1000 miles she how she runs
let everything indside break in right till you hit the 80 and up range

they are not esigned for inner city traffic like 10 -20 mph
at least thats what i think
they suck in traffic

let it break in

rough idle... kinda like a beefed up hotrod, eh? hmm, that sucks. NOT.

shift faster. infact, if you have ever upshifted without a clutch, ie: on a dirt bike.. try it on the busa. smoother than using the clutch.

as far as breakin. I wont go there. the dude that introduced me to dragracing, puts 100miles on his bikes then nothing but dragracing from there. just keep the motor clean inside.

oh, congrats on da busa, and welcome to 'the' board.

A link for break-in secrets since it was brought up...

Also, my busa shifted clunky until I installed a PowerCommander with a good map. Now it shifts butter smooth without clunkin'. I hear the TRE mod also improves shift smoothness. Like Cache said, shiftin' without the clutch was smoother for me until I got the PC. Much better all the way around since the PC install though.

No, the busa doesn't like 10-20 mph. I don't think they were designed with that in mind. Break her in then step on it, I believe you'll be happy.

Dude, its a Zuk. I thought the same thing coming over from 2 hondas. They just like to grumble at ya a little, not quite as smooth.

At first I worried, then I realized it kinda got an attitude. So far, so good, not maintenance needed after 5k...

Whats this TRE and PC upgrade? Will my shop do it for me where I bought it and is it advisable to wait until the warranty it over?

Thanks.

For sale:

After posting my questions last, my buddy came over and was sitting on the bike commenting about how its a big bike... then... it fell over... after throwing my helmit at him I looked at the damage and the pipe got messed up and the lower part of the fairing got scratched in several places.

I called the bike shop and they said Im looking at 565 for the fairing and 450 for the pipe if I want it to look new again.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a cheaper place to get parts? and isnt there something I can install (like a footped) on the side that might save this next time...

Damn!

Thump your friend then do the kickstand mod. It is a sticky in the mods forum.

Maybe your homeowners insurance will cover the damage? For parts try ronayers.com.

Congratulations on the new bike and welcome to the board!

1. Adjust the idle speed. A few have reported this not adjusted right from the factory. Should idle around 1,200-1,500!

2. Shift whenever you want! The Busa has so much Torque across the power band that there really isn't a SWEET spot to shift. Now if you keep reving it up, it only gets better. I shift at around 2,500-3,000 just dinking around. If not, once it kicks me in the A@@ at 8,000 RPM's, I take it all the way to RED LINE!

3. That is the flapper valve doing it's job! It regulates the AIR intake to eliminate some of the laggyness when the RPM's are LOW! Once you get a pipe, PCIIIR and do the airbox mod most of this should go away.

4. The bike isn't made to chug around at 10-20 MPH! You are riding a beast that will do 80 MPH in first GEAR. You either have to pull in the clutch or GO FASTER!

Good luck on not KILLING your buddy!

The ecu retards the timing to limit power which also contributes to the rougher than necessary idle and lack of smoothness at low rpms. Like others have said above, TRE and PCIIIR are the ticket. Also like others said ... go faster! Fast is what this bike was designed for.
