06 GSX1300RK6 - At times hard to get in first and sixth. Goes nuetral between 5th and 6th occasionally. Is it me, a new bike, or an adjustment? Is the 600 mile maintenance just oil and filter ?

There is a false neutral between 5th and 6th. It gets better with time. Also, maybe adjust the shift lever down to get a better shift. Shift it like you mean it also.

Are you due for an oil change. That can make it a little tough to get into 1st. You may just need to break in the transmission other wise.

The 1st service is pretty much just an oil change. There is some debate as to Suzuki's warrantee and having the first maintence done at a dealer or doing it yourself.

The salesman said it was a warranty requirement, but customer paid. It also talked about adjusting the valves. The manual states 14.5K. He did not mention keeping it u nder 5.5K rpms.

It does get better with time. I'm over 4K now and I don't have that problem anymore.

If you come to a stoplight and it won't go into 1st while you're sitting still, let off the clutch a little then kick the shifter down... it'll pop into 1st no problem. It happens from time to time. Nothing to worry about.

And like others said, when going into 6th, shift it like you mean it. You can also just pop it into 6th with no clutch pull at all. I rarely use 6th gear (like most).

I know people will disagree with this but when I first got my Busa I had the same issue.  I was told to shift like I mean it.  I haven't had a problem since.  I recently switched to Maxima Maxim 4 Syn Blend.  She shifts so smooth now.  It's like night and day.

For difficulty getting into first, put gentle pressure on the shifter while easing out the clutch. Never force the shifter - you may bend the shift fork inside.

All good advise, I noticed easing out on the clutch helped. Definately busted the 5K mark a few times missing 6th. Pissed me off and embarrassed me at the same time. Doing better after 600+ miles. I don't know if it's the bike or the rider breaking in.

There is a list of items that should be checked at the 600 mile maintenance (in addition to the oil/filter change).  You can download the maintenance manual and probably do this yourself.  I did mine....  In addition to some general mechanical abilities, you will need a torque wrench and some free time.  The exhaust header bolts are a real PITA for first timers.

As long as you document EVERYTHING and save all receipts for oil etc, it will not void your warranty.

There is some real peace of mind knowing that I do it myself and everything is put back together right-- after all, it's my ass thats on it at 150+ mph!  Also, you don't have to worry about some squid scratching it or some other crap.

Oh.. and go with FULL Synthetic oil.  It will help the shifting and you will notice a difference in the bike.  Mobile 1 mx4t 5-30 (15-50 in the cold months)
