Slipper Clutches and the Busa...

So, unfortunately this site has grown on me quite well...so I dont visit other sites. I havent seen mention of Slipper Clutches for the Busa. I've read up on the advantages of them would like some real world opinions on this.

Also modified clutch housings? Looked at Brocks Ultra light billet clutch, springs, cushion etc...thinking about this route, but for street/canyon occasional dragstrip outing, or is this overkill?

The Hayabusa has a back-torque limiting assembly located inside the clutch basket from the factory . It works very well although not a true slipper design .

Any of the billet or cushion mods will defeat it's purpose/ action .

I ride the twisties and will keep the stock clutch because of the above and for myself , I would not do a cushion or other mod unless drag racing all the time

I agree with mountainmotor. I have the Ultra Light billet mod on mine. I drag race it about once-twice a month and it provided much better clutch feel when launching.
I ride it on the street and took it to Eureka Springs Last mount to ride the twisties. With the clutch mod, I have to be a bit more careful on the downshift using engine braking. Not a bunch but I can tell the difference. It is enough of a difference that I will swap the stock parts back when(if) I go to a track day.

As far as the cushion.. Your 05 (02-07) has a clutch cushion mod from the factory. I’ve been told Brocks is a bit different. I have heard mixed feedback on it but most that compared the two could not tell the difference. So the ones that could, didn’t think it was worth the $$ or trouble to swap. If you have a 99-01, go for it.

Overall in most applications, the stock clutch in the 02-07 Hayabusa is about as good as it gets. It is when you want to push it to an extreme, like full throttle launches, slipping the clutch for the first 150’ that it takes a few mods. When you start comparing it to the liter bikes, ZX12/14, etc it really shines.

There are Slipper Clutches available thru us.I sold one to a gentleman from here some time ago.The other mods you see available like the guys said above will defeat your canyon carving purposes.lmk if I can help you with any other info on the slipper clutches.

Ok, so I guess I need to stick to what I have now then. What about clutch spring upgrades? Worth anything, or not needed? And also, when it is time to install new clutch pack, any recommended over others?

And thank you for the very in-depth explainations and info, I love feedback like this.

I installed a yoyodyne slipper clutch on my project Busa "thor" worked outstanding and I carve twisties like no tomorrow. If you are like me and engine brake the heck out of the bike to get proper corner entry speed. Check with "DJ" Sageronin he has the bike now and rode it like he stole it in WV as well a couple of weeks ago....big money but if you ride hard and like corners its what you want. Use the Gixxer 1K Barnett springs with the yoyodyne kit. Works great!

It sounds like people are talking about 2 different clutches.

Heavier springs and clutch mods for DRAG racing.

Slipper clutches for ROADracing.

CAT3, slipper clutches are awesome and will help keep the backend behind you during heavy braking into corners. BUT they cost ALOT. If I had the $$$$$, I'd get one. But I can't spend that kind of money.

The heavier springs are needed with the yoyodyne slipper clutch kit or the clutch will give on acceleration, I know, happened to me, since the kit was made for the Gixxer 1K. The heavier springs and the yoyodyne kit work well on the Busa. I know, I installed it. Just my opinion from actually using one. It works. I usually don't comment on something I have not tried personally. The kit helped me get through the mountains much safer and clearly caused a gap in the pack. The only bike which kept constant in the mirrors in the technical stuff was a 06 ZX-10 ridden by a very experienced rider. So for twisty carving or road racing the slipper clutch works great! Just my 2C.

I knew you knew he meant road racing slipper clutches.

I got the feeling that some people were talking about moding the clutch for drag racing instead road racing.

I saw street and canyon use....very little strip would be ok, anything more this is not the mod for him....twisties oh yeah! It is overkill if you don't ride very well or don't normally take corners at double or triple the posted sign. Not saying that is good to do and yes I am guilty.

Greg, couple more questions on this Yoyo setup.
Can it handle power up wheelies or will that cause issues? I do enjoy riding 12 o'clock now n then for shiz n giggles.
And is this Yoyo for the 1k as well, or just the spring for 1k? I imagine since your opening your shop you could get pricing for me? If so, please pm. Thanks.

Yes, power wheelies are no issue. Have done a few myself. I also like an occaisional burnout, call it therapy but it works. Not sure how soon you want this set up. Give me a bit and I will set up an account with the vendor, not sure if you are near Sageronin, "DJ" he can chime in on how he likes the set-up as well. When the throttles were pinned in the tight stuff during the fall ride in WV, he and Yamahor were really working the turns really well. The slipper clutch really works well on the mountains especially when coming down off a mountain. I paid $675.00 let me see what I can work out for you. GPW

I'm in no hurry at all. I am looking at stepping up probably a month or two. Nothing wrong with my clutch as of now, of course I could "make something wrong" but not wife may not like that as much as I would.
