Small Airbox Mod

Ok, I'm sure this has been covered a million times, but as the search aint working (I love being able to use this excuse

) I want your opinion on doing it or not. I am installing a full exhaust over the winter, just scored a new Pipercub filter from Mr. Bogus, Got my pcIII coming, did the pair removal and block off plates.
Do I need to do it or not? I am not opposed to doing it at all, just wanna make sure that I do everything that I need to.
And any other suggestions to what I might need to do to would be good.
There is also the large Airbox mod to...which one?

Thanks

You don't NEED it. But you may pick up a few ponies up top with it. If you do it, you need to do the small box mod. DO NOT DO THE LARGE BOX MOD unless you are doing serious engine work.

Do the small box mod and go to four short oem stacks. When going to a full system with a PCIII usb, and pair valve removal the small airbox mod and the short stacks (OEM THIS IS IMPORTANT, they are cheaper and just, if not more effective than aftermarket stacks), allows you to give the motor better breathing all around.

Do the short stack mod only if your an average to light weight person. The short stacks actually have a negative effect when a heavy/big person uses them.

How so? Just curious because I weigh about 200lbs with my gear, I did it because we saw an improvement on the dyno with them in terms of how it carried the torque curve and the horsepower peak.

I'm listening.. I weigh about 225 and thinking of doing this as well.. what about low end torque, did you lose any there..

I'm talking about all this that you have done..

Ya know, I don't think that I lost any low-end, and from what I can see on the dyno sheet and feel with the seat of my pants, the mdrange just pulls like a mother and it carries that mad panic like rush all the way to redline now, whereas before you could feel it kinda drop off at 10000rpm.

And see how it is making over 90lbft of torque from 5500 all the way to 10000, I can really feel that in the seat of the pants dyno too.

Every dyno sheet that I have seen shows me that there is little or no reason to buy or install velocity stacks..

If you are trying to eeek out every last pony then sure but it is awful pricey hp.

I am just about to the idea that you are going to be better off losing 5 lbs off your fat belly...

If they were "free" then it might be worth playing with on the street but for my money, I think you are better of to just purchase a good pipe.

Well, I got short OEM stacks from Goldenchild for free, but even to purchase OEM stacks is very affordable. I am curious about this too, on the dyno, I saw a slightly higher torque at 5000rpm with two short and two long stacks, and a quicker drop off in power up top. I would be willing to switch back and try it again in the factory config. the next time that I see Daniel and post my results. Has anyone else got feedback on one vs. the other? Good thread

I'm getting ready to take mine to Smithers to get her custom mapped and want all mods done.. can't afford to dyno 2 or 3 times. if you know what I mean..

"C" your dyno looks pretty impressive to me..

Wheres all the tuners on this one?

Here is MY experience.
I did 2 base line tests with a Garmin GPS.
The bike only had Yosh RS-3 race bolt ons, and yosh cams.
2-1 mile runs.
One from 75mph shifting thru the gears. At the 1 mile mark I was at 182mph.
The second was a 1 mile roll in top gear from 110 mph. At the mile mark it was 183mph.
I rode straight home, did the small box mod and plugged in the PCII with the stock map.
an hour and a half later I did the 2 runs again.
One from 75mph shifting thru the gears. At the 1 mile mark I was at 187mph.
The second was a 1 mile roll in top gear from 110 mph. At the mile mark it was 188mph.
It revved quicker and you could hear the box mod.
You COULD feel the difference also!
It made exactly 5mph difference on BOTH tests, so that's enough to convince ME that it works.

This is just MY experience.
