I bought my Gen 3 with 0 miles and she didn't give off that awesome new bike engine smell. Only the exhaust smelled like a burned baseball. 
I remember when I bought my '04 ZX-6RR that same year and it gave off that exciting new bike scent I was hoping the new 'Busa would give me.
My ZX-10R sometimes lets me have a whiff even though it's a couple months shy of 18 years old. I'm not crazy. Kawasakis let off a different engine scent.

They do smell good new, or at least they used to, and sometimes the smell will linger for years.
It's the factory engine coating you're smelling, and the differences between manufacturers...and now the stink from Euro5 emissions...
