Someone attempted to steal the Busa

Went to visit a friend a couple nights ago and parked the bike RIGHT in front of her place. Walked out less than an hour later to go to the store and some idiot is cutting wires with hopes of hot-wiring the beast. He jumped into a running car complete with driver and off they went. I went to give chance on the Busa and there was no juice. If I see the @$$clown again, I'm going to cook up a little pavement and ask em to do a taste test. Then while he's trying to decide if the curb or oil spot tastes better I'm going to cut every wire in his little blue car so he "can't get away again". Bars were locked so he would have been doing donuts all night but regardless... I've got damage and need a little help.

Last night I soldered the wires back together and tested them with both an ohm meter and a good firm tug. Both gave great results. I slipped some shrink tubing over the exposed wires and shrunk them down to size. Wrapped the whole pigtail with electrical tape and reconnected the wires to the feed under the dash (the green male/female connector).

Problem is when I turned the key I got exactly what I got the night of the attempted theft. No juice at all. No lights, no self test, no high pitched whistle, nothing. I checked my fuses and they look fine. I still replaced each of them on the off chance one was fried but looked good. Still nothing.

I called the stealership and they advised that there is a security feature that checks the electric current to see if it has the perscribed resistance. If it doesn't, no juice. Insurance won't cover it because parts & labor are under the deductable.

Does anyone know of anything else I could do or of anyone selling a working ignition switch for cheap? I've checked eBay and just missed a sale. I'll be calling a few scrap yards as well.

Any help, information, etc would be greatly appreciated!

Damn sorry to hear that, bro! Check with JohnnyCheese or GoldenChild. There will be some others to pop in as well.
 
I have a feeling it could be something simple like the main fuse blown (left side of tail section closer to the battery), or while you shrunk/taped the wire you just soldered, it could lose connection.

I would re-check everything again. And, not only with Ohm-meter, but with V-meter as well. Try to sharpen the tips of the probe, so you could measure voltage by either checking the connectors, or right through the wires. I've heard of specifically designed probes which let you clamp the wire and puncture it to take measurements. Don't think RadioShack has those though.

Have you tried disconecting the battery.  Leave it off for 10 minutes.  Reattach.  Then try again.  The electronics in a modern motorcycle are plentiful.  When the wires were cut it could have been shorted.  By removing the power you may fix the problem.

Also how's the battery? A weak one plays havick with the electronics.

I will hook it up to a voltage meter tonight. I'm fairly certain I didn't cook the connections while heat shrinking but I'll definately check it out. Not a bad idea. I'll also give the fuse in the rear a check to make sure it's not blown.


Battery looks fine. Hooked the battery up to another bike and it cranked right up. I'll disconnect both terminals and let it rest overnight and see if that has any effect.


Any other ideas? Keep em coming please.

A side note... I'd like to fix the Busa without buying the parts. This is my way of giving the finger to all the idiot theives out there. I'm going to exhaust every possible fix before I even think about buying the replacement part(s).

Yup, check the main fuse and try leaving the battery off for a while. That's what I'd try...
 
Download from this site the service manual, have a look at the circuit on 7-11 (page 376) meter this out first.
At least you will see if power is getting to the ECU.

Between the batt and ECU there are 2 fuses, 1 relay (intergrated turn signal relay), Key switch, motor run/stop switch, side stand switch and neutral switch.

It sounds messy but its a very simple circuit.

For starters try this: side stand down, run/stop switch to run, key switch to on, gear to neutral.
Now measure for volts on one of the wires of your plug cap/coils, if you see 12v then power should be getting to your ECU.

If not then the fault may lie in the ign interlock circuit. This is a good thing as it is a simple analogue circuit.

The Busa seems to use a hot (earth switched) system so when powered up everything goes live and is controled by earth switching. (not really sure of the benefits of this).


If you are getting power it may mean the ECU is FUBAR. You could try pluging in a fresh ECU but BE WARNED, if a wiring fault still exists you could DESTROY the test ECU.

This is why it might be a good reason to take it to a shop.

Unless you are 100% sure of your testing and wiring skills and you know the harness is 100% correct its better to let a shop dammage their own kit.

I rarely leave my bike out of sight, but when I do, I turn on my alarm with pager. As soon as they got close or touched my bike, I and everyone else would know about it.

Well worth the $300 rather then screwing around trying to fix a wiring problem and not being able to ride.

Did you get their license plate number?

I got the beast up and running again. It was the fuse back near the ECU that was blown.

I reconnected the wiring up front, taped the pigtail coming out of the assembly, put the fairing on (which was off to follow wires), put the triple clamp back in place, reseated the fuse box and road for 6 hours last night. It was a beautiful thing... didn't realize how much I missed her!?!

Down with the thieves! Didn't cost me a dime bastages!!

I'll be winning the alarm so that will be going on the bike once shipment is received... and should it get "lost" then I'll be buying one just like it.
