Something in my tank?

Hey all, new to the board. I'm currently bike sitting a 2000 Hayabusa that i will more than likely (read definitly) end up owning. Its run fine for the past 2 weeks, but the last few days, i've had trouble starting her a few times. it would just turn over but not fire. the FI light flashed and the clock flashed the FI warning. So i lifted the tank back, re oiled the K&N since i was in there, put the tank back down, and it fired right up.

yesterday, it again would not start, so i tilted the tank back and shook it a little, layed it back down, and again, it fired right up. this leads me to beleive there is something floating around inside the tank thats getting caught in the fuel line or something.

How would you all recomend i go about checking this? any ideas that dont involve removing the tank and draining it?

No expert hear...if you really believe its in the tank, take it off clean it out, drain the fuel into clean bucket and look for anything that doesn't belong. I could be way off on this........I'm sure a professional will chime in real soon with expert help!!!!

well whatg leads me to beleive its in the tank itself is when i tilted it and it fired. im assuming that the tilting and resulting sloshing of the fuel swept the offending particle loose

Look for rust particles inside the tank. Had that problem with a car once, had to blow compressed air through the fuel line to remove a piece of rust off the outlet inside the tank.

Also, make sure the gas cap vent is working etc.

well i have noticed that after i ride it, i hear a whistling noise, which is excess pressure escaping through the gas cap. If i pop the cap open i hear a nice whoosh sound and it stops.

well i put gas in it thursday and have been riding it. the issue has not re occured. maybe it only happens when the tank is low? two more days of work this week so the tank should be fairly empty by my days off so i think im gonna pull it monday or tuesday

ok there is definitly a problem with the fuel system somewhere! I rode her to work today, thought i'd have enough gas to make it home, didn't, so i topped it off. then about four times on the way home, it stumbled. Twice when i was doin 80 on the highway in 5th, sorta felt like maybe the chain was binding or something, but i know the chain is adjusted right since i did that last night. then stumbled once in 3rd when i was doin about 55. then it stumbled again when i was in second doin about 45 or so. then, taking off from a light, i was at about 25 in 1st around 3'ooo rpm or so and it stalled. but i was on the throttle when it died!!

it fired right back up, took off from the next light, stalled again. next light, died while i was sitting still. pull up to the garage, pull in the clutch, and it died.

I watched the tac while i was at the lights and it usually idles around 1,150, but i watched the needle go from 2,000 to 850 and everywhere in between while i was stopped with the bike in first and the clutch pulled in. I even took my hand off the throttle. it still jumped around.

Well i pulled the tank and drained it, boy was that a PITA. I smelled like gas for two days!!
Anyway i pulled the intank filter out and there was indeed a bunch of crap on it. So i blasted it down with some carb cleaner and put everything back together. then i used a deep fryer oil filter and poured the gas back in the tank (I had just filled it with premium) Took her for a ride and had no problems at all. so i think that fixed the problem.

check this out this thread it worked on my Busa. (Fuel Filter Change. Under Technical/Modification by Narcissus).

What you are describing is you tank venting system. The hose is either plugged or kinked. When this happens the tank builds up a vacuum when the fuel pump runs and cannot draw anymore fuel due to the vacuum. The hissing you hear from your gas cap is the air echanging into the tank and trying to equalize. Bugs can build a nest in the vent line or it is most likely kinked. Pull the tubes off at the tank and blow through them to make sure they are not blocked. Then follow all the way down and make sure they are not kinked. Also make sure they are not kinking when the tank is lowered. They exit on the right lower side of the bike just forward of the peg. Although this could be something else from what you describe I would put money on this being it.

yah.. I tink dis was your problem... and possibly partly to blame on the crap in the tank..

I bet you solved both problems though.. hose is probably no longer kinking when you let it down since you had to remove it and replace it.. probably got it back where it goes.. and of course the junk is now out of the tank.

good show!

enjoy..

that'll be $84 for my diagnosis..

and $36 for my second opinion on the guy before me's diagnosis.

Hey ego with the time stamping thing on these posts all screwed up your diagnosis actually came before mine.

hey you might want to make sure your tank vent is not plugged up, this will cause you problems also.

Hey hey, guess what? the mistery problem is back AGAIN!! I just don't get it. two days ago I went on a 200 mile ride, doing some high speed twisties, get to Ramona and fill the tank, and it won't start. So I go back to what I have done before, rock the bike side to side. go to start it, Nothing. FI indicator and light flashes. try it a few more times, still nothing. I kick the choke on, it fires right up. runs fine the rest of the ride. Starts again no problem after lunch. I get home and pull in the garage and just park it on the side stand temporarily as i needed a pitstop, go back out to move it into its spot, and again, Won't start fopr anything. same deal, FI is going off.

Get up early today to go on a club ride, the other three bikes in the garage fire up fine, My Moms Trike fires right up, the ST1300 fires right up, my Buddies Shadow Sabre 1100 fires right up, does the Busa? hell no. I tried everything to get it to kick over to no avail. So now everyone but me is out riding.

WHAT THE HELL IS THE PROBLEM WITH THIS THING!?!?!?!

with all the crap you had in your tank before maybe its back or you have a pinched line or your fuel lines are clogged? Fuel pumps have been known to go bad on these as well and with yours being 5 years old its a possibility. Good luck with it!
