Speedo plug supposed to look like this?

I unhooked the harness from the back of my cluster and the male part has a little metal piece that seems to be missing. The corresponding area on the female harness has a metal prong. It seems there should be something there but I'd really like to confirm this before doing anything major. Sorry for the terrible resolution. If needed Ill take another pic and post it.

Sorry for the poor resolution. I can't find a good pic zoomed in close enough for detail. However, I looked at the plug and it is missing a wire in between the pink and yellow. I'll have a look at the manual and see if I can decipher those electrical diagrams. I traced down the bundle and there wasn't a loose wire or anything.

Ok, maybe (fingers x) this'll work. I took some with my phone, which seems slightly clearer than my camera. Then, I resized them and adjust glare. Any better. I hope so, I don't have any more light capturing devices. In the top left of the connector in the black hole is where the connection should be made between metal pieces but that little area doesn't have a wire in it. I traced down the bundle and found no evidence of a previous wire. Is this normal? I sure hope so I'm not good enough with electrics to rewire a significant chunk of my baby. The location of the missing wire in the second pick is between the pink wire and the yellow wire.

is this just something you found or is bike not running right and you are troubleshooting it ?
Are 1st set of pics 4 yrs old or is you cam date off ?

what yr bike is this ?

I bought the bike with speedo/tach issues about 2 months ago. The bike is running okay. I am in the process of combing through it and making sure all is well before I start riding consistently (i.e. brakes/rotors, speedo, turn signals, exhaust, blah blah blah). I want everything is considerable condition.

The needle will jump but won't register speed. Since I have to take all plastic off and for maintenance and other things. I figured I'd yank off the cluster and have a look see and this is what I've found. Pics are from yesterday, 4-5-2010, camera date resets every 2 months or so. It's a 2001 with an extended swingarm (8' I think) hmmm, isn't there a speedo sensor on rear sprocket as well? You think maybe that could be it?

sorry my first busa now is an 09 so I can't answer but I wanted to get it out so others may help more .
Just curious on your reasons for being there .

If I recall correctly, my '06 is the same with one terminal blank. I just checked the electrical diagram in the service manual and it shows 15 wires going into the 16 terminal connector. I couldn't find a diagram that shows which are occupied and blank, but it does show wire colors and there's a wire color legend.

Ya, my speedo doesn't work either. It zeros out when i turn the bike on, but doesn't do anything after that. Along with the odometer. The rpms work though, and that is how I keep track of how fast i'm going. I tried replacing the speed sensor, but to no avail. Next step would be the whole cluster gauge, which is a ridiculous $600+ dollars.... Needless to say, i'm fine for now. Good luck with yours! Let us know if you what you find out!

does the bike came with Hid's, see were the ballasts are at and if they are to close to to the cauge cluster, unplug the hids and see what she will do, there have been so many issues relating to HIDs making the cluster go crazy due in part to RF issues.

sorry for the lack of correspondence I've been busy.

rusheriv: I find it interesting that the diagram in the manual has the pink and yellow wires on opposite ends of the connector. When they are beside each other in mine.

Phrogg: Yep that sounds just like mine. I got tired of trying to figure everything out only to get nowhere. I called the shop and had them come pick it up. Hopefully, they can figure out whats going on.

riccoh: No, I'm stick running stock lights. Thanks for the info though because I'm looking to do the hid upgrade in a month or so. Maybe that will fix my speedo

Are you sure it's just yellow and not the yellow/blue tracer? Hard to tell from the fuzzy pic, but it looks like there's another color on the yellow that next to the pink.

rusheriv: yes it's just a solid yellow wire. I still haven't confirmed whether something should be there or not. Local dealer couldn't definitively answer but said more than likely it's supposed to be that way. Idk???
