Pushed the limits today. Bike climbed smooth and steady until it got about 3/4 of an inch past 180 @ 9800 RPMs. Noticed the needle stopped moving so I eased out of the throttle. Noticed later that there's two pegs inside the speedo, top and bottom mechanical stops. Speedo seems fine, but can you damage it? Stock '06.

No you can't damage it, but also don't think you were doing 180 mph since the speedos are about 5% to 10% inaccurate below 100 mph and ALOT more above that number. Still, your were traveling mighty FAST

If you hit the stops to much on the far right you will bend the needle!!

Ok, needle can't bend as it's driven by a magneto which is not strong enough to bend it. The speedo's are off by a little over +7% and have linear error through out the range. Meaning that the percentage of error remains the same at all readings from 9 to 190. At 100 the speedo will read approximately 7mph too high, and at 200 it will be 14mph too high.

Best solution without argument is the speedohealer.

if peging the speedo needle at the stops would cause damage mine would be broke don,t worry about it becareful she is a beast . 2005 busa 10,600 miles also you can bury the speedo in 5th gear so i,ve been told. haha.

(dadofthree @ Nov. 04 2006,02:47) At 70 I'm dead on. Had heard about the speedos.
With a stock speedo at a indicated 70...you're doing approximately 63mph

Yes you can definitely damage it but only by not pegging it out at least once a week. If you don't it will get sticky and be off by even more.

Way to go on the high speed run. Be safe and have fun!
