Sprocket size . . . Need feedback

Okay guys, I have an 04 with 12K miles.

I know, I will have pics soon.

I am completely, I mean completely, redoing the bike and need to know what size sprockets to go with.

I read the gearing goes up a little going to a 17/42 but I like both acceleration and top end. What would be the best at the strip and on the long stretch of highway that I LOVE to open her up on?

Oh, it was a limited edition till I laid her down, now it will be corvette orange with polished evrywhere!!!

If you want to keep the stock length chain and use something at the strip, go with a 16T front, only because it lengthens the wheelbase albeit slightly.

If you want top end and decent pull and still want to use it at the strip, go with a 42 rear and get a new chain long enough to go to the back of the adjusters.

If you want the funnest and don't care about a little wheelie issue...then go 43 rear with stock length chain. That is what I have and it is

Thanks,

Though I don't have a lot of posts, I have read alot on here and it is nice that at least someone took the time to answer my post!!

I have run a 17/40 17/42 16/40 16/42 16/43. I prefer the 16/42 at the strip. The 17/40 on the street if I'm cruising, and the 17/42 on the street if I am "playing". Some run a 16/40 or 16/42 on the street, but it is too much gear for me. I prefer to use the torque and have a little less rpm when cruising. It is a bit more controllable coming off the corners as well.

Well, I've thought about this for two months and here is the conclusion that I came up with. I wanted some more "zip" but didn't want to hurt the interstate crusing too much. 17-42 @ 4,000rpms (not much buzz there) is about 70mph. 16-40 @ 4000rpms is about 69.8mph so as you can see not a lot of difference. So why the 16 front instead of the 17? I chose the 16 because it's easier to replace the rear sprocket when I want to play "city racer" with a 42. ....hence, the 16 front and standard length chain will work on the 40 OR 42 tooth rear. At least that's why "I" did it.

Thanks guys,

I ordered my sprockets today and I went with a 17-43 setup.

Hopefully it will be what I think it will. Lots of fun!!!

I am seriously considering the 17/43 setup as well....
should I replace both sprockets at the same time??
I have about 14000km on the original chain and
sprockets.. just want more pep for around town...
also just to double check if I run the 17/43 setup
I keep the stock length chain correct??

kaycee04le let me know how you like the setup
if you don't mind....

Thanks
Joe

Stock chain works with 17/43...with that many miles most people would change both sprokets and the chain.

well.. not sure if you notice... (not being a bobo..) but it is really bout 9000miles on em.. we here Canadians have the
metric deal.. just wasn't sure if you noticed the KM part..

Thanks for the reply tho.. just wanted to make sure...

Do you think with 9000miles on the original it needs both
still? or can I get away with just the rear sprocket this
year and do the chain next? is there a tell tale sign that the
chain is worn or does it just snap when it's done?

Thanks again
Joe.

Awesome info everyone! Thanks! My 06 tachs @ 4000 rpm at 75 mph. I like to cruise at 80 mph, but above 4200 rpm the "powerband" really sucks down mileage. I want to go to a 39 tooth rear, but I am wondering what this will do to all the fun I have been having in the canyons!? I wonder if keeping the rpms up and just dropping to a lower gear will keep me on pace in the canyons? My buddy has an 06 CBR1000RR and I am finally getting good enough to keep up with him at Isabella and Latigo Canyons. Not bad for a 45 year old geezer on a Busa... I have not had an opportunity to get this thing to Willow Springs yet, and I'm not sure if I want to. I may end up purchasing a GSXR1000 for future track days, just so that I have something other than the Busa to wreck. I have been riding HD for many years, so sportbikes and corners are kind of a new experience for me. I love it! I will never own another Harley again!!! Woo Hoo!

im new to the entire gear question myself. i recntly, YESTERDAY bought and installed a 16/42 combo per the professors advice and loved it at the track, hard off the line and wrapped out fast. but i love the highway and cruising at 100 when theres no traffic. the 16/42 was to low, lots of buzz and gas mileage died! im going back to the 40 rear and sticking with the front 16 for now unless im heading to the track... easier to change the rear as stated earlier. i am interested in a 16/39 i think, my question is this-- will it be the same as a 17/40 combo?

i put on the 16 in the front and finally got a chance to rid it and was like a totally different bike still cruises good but has alot of pull threw the gears by far the best mod yet
