i've been reading sprocket topics all night, and i have narrowed it down to keeping 17 up front, and either a 42 tooth or 43 tooth in the back.here is my ?. i am not a drag racer by any means,i like to just cruise around and thats it,i dont ever go above 155 on the speedo,so my ? is i what more power down low and when cruising i know i will feel a difference with a 42, but should i go with the 43 if i'm going to spend it.i want all the power i can get,but i dont what to be cruising around with the rpm's to high so before i buy the 42 or 43 i leave the voting to the pro's. thanks guy for all the help u can give. like i said i want good power just don't want to kill the bike or really just the back tire..

17/42...all the way, 16 could be better but, will stretch the chain more...

im in ur same boat and my 2 choices came down to 17/42 or 16/42. i decided to go with 16/42 because i wanted a bit more acceleration for those track days. if u r not going to the track, but want more "umph" id go 17/42 as well as getting that ZZZ chain

You can go 17/43 without changing the stock chain. RPM about 4200/4300 at 70mph. I went with 43t and love the difference from 40t. Gas mileage a little less but not unreal. Still 35mpg around town. And so easy in traffic and on the clutch.

I just went with a 43 out back and a stock 17 in front.
As soon as I took off outta my driveway I could feel the difference!
I will never go back!
You will have a smile from ear to ear....

I am not a track guy and do a lot of driving around town and commuting to work. On the advice of the part guy I deal with, I went -1 on the front and this was plenty of change for me.

Based on one of the post though, Why does -1 in the front have more affect on stretching the chain than +2 or 3 on the back?

good luck, safe riding

by the way, just -1 on the front will "totally for sure" pull the front wheel off the ground with 290lb rider and full tank of gas. -1 and +2 or 3 on the back and I would think it could qualify in trick riding.

-1 up front is the same as +2 in the rear. so if u do -1/+2 gearing in the end, its the same as +4 in the rear.

just put 200miles on a set of 16/42 love them, comes out of the hole fast. at 70mph around 4300rpm:cool:
