40 some years old and still never outdone...

Walter Cronkite was one of the few civilians to ever get to go for a ride..

I still would like to know how fast that plane could go. Maybe faster than the plane itself could handle. I live near the air&space museum both Dulles and DC. I need to get out and see the Dulles site. I've heard it's nice.

I've had the privilege of watching it launch out of RAF Mildenhall a couple of time.

Thanks Rock. That is still my favorite plane we have had. Just a beautiful bird.

Truly a remarkable machine...even more so for the time it was produced and operated.

I'm not yet ready to believe that little story about asking ATC for groundspeed readouts, as I don't know that the SR-71 was equipped with VHF radios, but most of the other information seems pretty accurate, if very basic.

I am envious of your experience, rokadaous. I'll have to settle for my time spent admiring the aircraft at a museum in Kansas.

How far are you into your flight training, wharthog3?

 The SR 71 is my all time favorite jet.
Do you think those engines put out some heat?

Truly an awesome plane. I got to see one when I was in the Army. It had just taken off from Beale. The afterburner flame looked as long as the whole plane.
