Sr-71

Thanks for sharing that! I have always loved that jet. You should read the book, Sled Driver, that stuff is true! The one that gets me is asking for clearance to 60,000ft. ATC asks him how he plans on getting to 60,000 and he says he is coming down to 60. He says the controller just goes quite for a min. then says your cleared. :beerchug:It is a great read.

:bowdown: A true work of art without a doubt. I'm glad it was ours

Question that immediately comes to my mind is what did they replace it with? I'm one of those that believes it was way too successful and way too important to just do away with and most likely was replaced by something that we will not hear about for years to come. Could be wrong, but I love the theory behind the thought.

Fishhook thanks for the suggested read. I've added it to my list as that's the only kind of stuff I really ever read when it comes to books.

i live in kansas and in my town we have one of those in the lobby of a space museum here you can actually touch the plane so cool ... the fast plane on earth would live to ride in htat myself

They flew that drone at the last, (the drones put no pilots in danger of being captured as like in the Powers incident) and then retired them all in favor of satellite imaging (you know they can read your license plate from space now)... KokomoBusa and I got to go "hands on" with that drone at hanger 33 at Grissom AFB

no word on the "Aurora"

I'm not yet ready to believe that little story about asking ATC for groundspeed readouts, as I don't know that the SR-71 was equipped with VHF radios, but most of the other information seems pretty accurate, if very basic.
3?

Prolly made up story to some extent, ATC only see's airspeed readout by 2 digits on the radar scope, so if they are going faster than 999 knots, you wont know by how much. None the less, still a fast mo fo!

Phenomenal video. I too was surprised by them being decommissoned. YOu know our government always knows how to mess up a good thing.

Kelly Johnson was a magician! He designed two (F-104 was my fave) of my favorite aircraft of all time... with a slide rule and a drafting table! No CAD, No FEA, No CFD just good old fashioned engineering.

Here are a few pics from the McMinville Air museum I took last year. If you are a plane freak this is one not to miss.

Truly an awesome plane. I got to see one when I was in the Army. It had just taken off from Beale. The afterburner flame looked as long as the whole plane.

i was at beale off and on in the army right on the flight line with the 71...i was with the 11th sig brigade...the night launches were fantastic to see

the windshield heats to 600 degrees in flight and the jet itself stretches 4 inch..as they would sit in the hangers they would leak fuel and crew would put down absorbant to collect it but in flight the tanks would seal, even the wheel wells are presurized to keep the tires properly inflated in flight due to extreme altitude....what was cool was to watch them take off and as soon as they were off the ground they would just vanished into the sky, the first thing they would do is catch up to the tanker that took off some time before them...just amazing:bowdown:
