Sr-71

40 some years old and still never outdone...

Walter Cronkite was one of the few civilians to ever get to go for a ride..

here is a drone that they launched only with the SR-71.. this is one of I think 3 left? Jeff? you remember ?

I don't remember how many he said...Not many at all though. Very cool machine. When I get word of an SR71 on base if it ever arrives I'll let you know. Get some pics of that beast:thumbsup:

I would love to see one in person too.

1. Catch a flight to Wichita.

2. Rent a car

3. Drive thirty five minutes to Hutchinson, where in addition to some of the largest grain elevators you'll ever see, there is a museum called the Cosmosphere.

There resides the SR-71 someone earlier wrote about touching.

I do not think they have any plans of flying them (SR-71) again... (but they said that once before too)..

shame they would not tell us the specs on that D-21 drone..

I've been racking my brain trying to remember what compound that guy said the drone was made of...do you remember?

Titanium just like the hauler.. :) I must not have got a good shot of the ram-jet engine.. (see all the way through it.. :*(

This was a board at McMinville about the drone. Sorry for the crappy pic but you can just make out the text if you zoom on it.

I recommend getting out to the USAF Museum in Dayton OH (stationed there for 6-years). They've got one and a few other trick planes like the X-1 that you can walk around and check out not to mention a LOT of other stuff. I can't remember who but a friend of mine talked to one of the test pilots on a trip somewhere and heard some interesting stuff about that plane...

As much as I love it, it's completely obsolete now days with satellites and everything else. Even the stuff flying now.....WOW.....they've got scram jets that fly 8,000mph+ now days....

There is one on static display at the armament museum, at Eglin AFB too.. Physically, it is smaller than you would expect when your standing next to it. Looks like a frame built around 2 huge azz engines, very cool!
