Swingarm recommendations...

Hi everybody. I recently purchaced (but haven't even ridden) an '05 Busa w/real low miles. In the springtime after I get to ride it and make sure all is OK, I will be installing my Hahn turbo setup! I will ride with the stock swingarm initially, but I know when I take it to the strip, I won't be able to use a lot of the power w/a stock length arm. With stock motor, 93 octane, basic turbo setup, how much longer of a swingarm will I need to keep it under control? (I'd like to keep it as close to stock for driving on the street, but will lengthen enough to be able to use the turbo a little!) If, for the recommended length extension there are bolt-on extensions, should I use them as is, weld them in, or just avoid them all together and get a complete extended arm? I of course like saving money, but like saving my life more, so if they are junk, I'll stay away from them. Thanks for all input!!!

How are you going to ride it? Street ??? Drag Racing ??? LSR ???


If you planning on all 3 may not want to get crazy with the stretch can always add wheelie bars for occasional trips to the drag strip :dunno:



4" over an the bike ran fine
 
i agree with wheelie bars my buddy daily rides his built bking and drags it at the strip when he goes to the strip he changes out the rear tire (a complete setup with rotor sprockets etc) and puts on his wheelie bars and wham off to the races
 
wheelie bars? why? guys go low 8's with only a few inches over. some have gone 7's. he wont be goin fast enough to ever need wheelie bars with a stock motor. maybe 300 hp which is still a lot. probably more like 250 hp if using 93 unless he runs an alky kit

I need wheelie bars with a stock motor an no turbo:whistle: :laugh: But thats just cause it's me :laugh:
 
Majority of driving would be street, but at least a few trips to the track for some grudge racing. I have plenty of new tsubaki sigma chain and a spare tire/rim/sprocket etc., so if I wanted to have a little longer setup for just the track, I might swap out a longer swingarm, or maybe just find a compromise to cover street/strip like maybe +3 and leave it at that. Just for stock geometry's sake on the street, I'm sure closer to stock the better for handling.
All I know is I really enjoyed my 2000 vmax going from 11.7 to 11.0, and now I punched it out to a 1500, and still have to port my other head and finish a few other things, and it'll be back together and should be able to be in the 10's no problem...BUT...I'm guessing the 'busa will be just starting where my vmax will be finished off! I have a turbo on my car and my sled, and can't wait to see what it will be like to have one on the 'busa! Thanks guys!:cheerleader:

no you dont need them at all but if he wants to keep the swingarm stock its an easy add on and can ride with a completely stock setup and when he wants to go to the strip its an easy bolt on.. just my personal opinion thats all.
 
I'd just go with a 6-9" extended swing arm and call it a day ...its kind of hard to get the best of both worlds into 1 bike...I'd either turbo the bike and leave it stock wheelbase or lower it and put at least a 6" extended arm at minimum. With a turbo you're going to need some sticky tires, otherwise its just spin city. Oh and wheelie bars are kinda goofy imo unless you have a 6 second pro stock bike. As far as the extensions go...I've used them before a few times, even on my 08 Busa and they work fine as long as you install them correctly. I used loc tite as an added security measure on the bolts but never had an issue with them at 8" over I would wheelie my busa on the highway so they work pretty well. But eventually I just opted for a longer arm...I would get a Trac arm if you go with a complete swing arm. They have the nicest ones in my opinion. I opted to go a little cheaper and wish I had not, just spend the money on the good stuff or don't spend it at all. depending on how much power you plan on having...for the street 6" over is very controllable, mine came up once on the street with a shinko hook up tire in 2nd gear and I was running about 316hp at the time, and this was a hard acceleration from a dead stop. on the drag strip with the same tires and a decent launch it will come up in 1st and second, but 1st is just too violent on the street and spins the tire with the longer arm. Not sure how it would act at stock wheel base....would probably wheelie very easily....but the turbo is predictable, boost comes on smooth.

I would probably go with a 0-6" swingarm, as I do not trust extensions. I know lots of people use them and have no problems, but I would be the one in a million that does. If you wanted to get an extra chain, you could go from stretched to stock in the time it took to swap chains.....

Wheelie bars are more than just four bolts. You have to use a strut with them, which means removing the shock. And besides, training wheels are for sissies:rofl: (Unless you have a car tire drag-only bike)
 
0-6 would be my preference too, maybe 3-9 if you want to get more serious in the 1/4
~2-3" on the street gives good drive without compromising cornering too much , and will hookup fine most times on street tires
sort of have to adjust it in this range to find the sweet spot for your weight/tire/hp , too long and it blows the tire easily too short and it stands up
 
Dont forget if you go with the wheelie bars you will also have to use a strut.. So add that in to your trips to the dragstrip.. Remove shock install strut, bolt on wheelie bars and hope they are adjusted..

I see his point of wanting the nimble feeling of the stock length swingarm and not going with the extended for street riding on the twisties...

Its very difficult to do both, weekend drag strip and the next weekend back road twisties.

+1 on the Mcintosh! I was checking them out last night, they will even extend an OEM swingarm for around 350 which IMO is a much better route then extensions.

Thanks bro,i had it for 8 years and it was a great bike.Last year i got the itch for a Gen II and picked up a 2011 in Nov.

0-6" over will be all your going to need, and the Mcintosh will be your best bet:thumbsup:

Thanks bro,i may eventually pull off the rest of the graphics(next on my list is to get those rear sets and passenger peg brackets powder coated...so dadofthree will stop sweatin' me:laugh:)and when money gets right again maybe a few other things.:thumbsup:
