well, im doing my first oil change on this bike and was talking to one of the techs at suzuki and he said to stay away from synthetic on a daily driver because the motor and tranny share the same oil therefore breaking it down faster. he said sythetic would be better for racing and what not...

Whats your take on this?......

synthetic still stands up better, allowing for longer periods inbetween changes. That being said I still change about every 2.5 to 3k. Smooths out gear transitions and keeps everything cooler. Over all a better product for the best ride around

Your Suzuki Tech is full of beans. Ask them how many miles they have riden with the different oils. Start using Syns after the 2nd oil change assuming that you changed oil @ 600 and then again 1500 later. You will notice the diffeence. Lots of good oil out there< I ahve been happy with Mobil ! 15/50 red cap. So I will not change. I change the oil every 2500 nad filter every 5,000.

I use Mobile 1 synth,
Still purring at 58,800klms ( 36,700 + miles ), change around every 6000klms ( 3700 miles )
I ride it to work, go touring on it, enter it in flying , standing quarter miles and the odd hillclimb.

Yup, sounds like you have either a real bad mechanic, or maybe just a real old mechanic. Damn near everything BAD about Synthetic Oils I have ever heard has been from the 50+ crowd. Back in the day there were some real potential negatives involved with the synthetics of the day. Clogged filters, Goo build up, etc.
A modern High Quality Full Synthetic (Silkolene Pro-4 comes to mind) will protect your motor longer, will not break down, can withstand WAY more heat, is better at reducing friction, and is basically superior to Dino in every way... Well except for price.

Just asking you guys...When you said that you use mobil 1 15/50 (red cap) in your motor, are you talking about car motor oil or is it a special blend for motorcycles?

black2003 .

Special blend race oil.  It does not say motorcycle oil.  That way they can sell motorcycle oil for more.  Same blend as Mobil 1 MX4T they will not say so though.  I ran MX4T for 3 oil changes then went to 15/50, every bit as good.  It is blended for race engines and has the needed ingredents for the tranny.

I use Motul 5100 semi-synth seems to work Ok, & is formulated for use in bikes, to work well with the tranny. I aggree though synths are better especially after the initial breakin period.

I have 6500 miles on my busa...I change the oil frequently. I use regular 10w 40. Is it too late to switch to synthetic? Will the change from regular to sythetic muck things up on a 1 year old busa with 6500 miles on it?

No its not to late, the advise I was given was to put about 5,000 miles on the bike with regular oil to let it loosen up a bit & then switch to Synth to stop it loosening up anymore. Of course this is a very simplistic view of things, but thats what I did. no need to flush or do anything like that when you switch to Synth as any residual regular oil will mix OK with the synth.
