Funny. How about balancing a check book? Reading. Heck, the English language would be a good start.

Schools teaching kids about Global Warming using your tax dollars. Kids can't count change but we will blow smoke up their kazoo on the environment.

These days, we have a lot more to learn than we ever have in history. There is so much information to be had and so much to be learned. My thought is that we teach all of the basics quite thoroughly before introducing the esoterics.

I would think, however, that we could start differentiating earlier in the process. Let kids choose a major of study earlier than college.

As to global warming, there are no hard facts presented about it except that FACT: It does occur. The question remains, Do humans have any effect on it? Are we just plain arrogant to believe that we have enough influence over nature and global events to cause such a cataclysm?

Tough to say either way and the fact is, most of what we hear about it now is conjecture and opinion. For this reason alone, I don't feel it should be "taught" in school but it could be a topic of discussion on an informal basis.

I think the answer to that it its the arrogance of a few and the ignorance of the masses. And not just on the subjuct of global warming. A few scientists come up with some scraps of incomplete evidence to support some theory about something they already believe is true. They then make the leap that their guess has to be correct because they found some pieces of empirical evidence. Next thing its being crammed down the publics throat as fact even though there isn't conclusive proof, and the public buys it hook line and sinker because if its on the news it must be true.

Unfortunately, this is proving to be true on both sides of the "scientific" debate.

R8 you are KILLING me tonight!!

I taught Environmental science last year and yes I taught about Global warming and even showed the kids the "Inconvenient Truth" A lot of them asked some really DEEP questions and I always leave it open to them that they make their own opinions... I rarely voice my own opinion to these impressionable young adults.

I am now teaching Physical science and we just finished the conservation of energy (energy is not created or destroyed... just changes form) and the students asked me if that is true, why is there an Energy crisis. I told them because the energy we have is not in a form we can use. Technology is creating new ways to harness other forms of energy rather than fossil fuels. We don't have enough time to make more Fossil Fuels in this lifetime... so that is where "conserving energy" comes from.... then they started asking about global warming (can you tell my class does not follow a set plan?... we get off on a lot of tangents that are equally educational)and I told them I would show them the "Inconvenient Truth" next week after our test.

So am I wasting your tax dollars on teaching them this? That is your opinion. I am here to INFORM and GUIDE these students. As a teacher, I cannot instill my beliefs or opinions on them, I can just give them the facts (and resources to find the facts) and go from there. Al Gore presents some very good data in that movie (and it relates to us since we did suffer the wrath of Hurricane Katrina) and I remind he students that this is one man's opinion and they should investigate the other side's opinion as well before making their decision.
