In my job I travel to Mexico a lot. Before my last trip a friend of mine (who is a self professed Tequila Aficionado) and I are having a discussion about Tequila. Before I left he is telling me about this Cuervo Reserva De Familia! This stuff is not cheap at around $119 a 750ml bottle locally. So on my trip this local guy takes us out for dinner in Guadalajara and after dinner he starts ordering the rounds of Tequila. At first we started out on the regular old Don Julio which is pretty good in its own right. We started talking about good tequilas and this stuff came up. Anyway I excuse myself and upon my return I am met by a waiter with a big cart of Tequila. He pours our host a glass of Tres Generacciones, some Don Julio for my friend and then I look up and my jaw drops. This guy is wielding a 3 liter jug of Reserva De Familia and pours me a half a full size Brandy glass of this stuff! I was like Thank you very much but I cannot accept that. So I am badgered by he and the rest of the people in our party to accept this mans rather generous offering, which I ultimately did. He referred to this stuff as the Mexican Cognac and I have to say I wholeheartedly agree! This stuff is so smooth and so rich it is truly to be savored for as long as it takes (took me the better part of an hour)! You definitely don’t want to pound shots of this stuff. I had visions of myself sitting in a big old Leather chair with a Cohiba in one hand and a glass of this stuff in the other with no particular place to be.
So this morning a coworker and I are having a conversation about Tequila once again and he told me that he and some friends had shared a shot of this stuff at a restaurant and agreed that it was indeed all that. I was of course badgering him to go straight to the Liquor store but at $119 a fifth it is a little too pricey for my tastes or his. So for anybody who knows about this stuff is this truly the best of the best, or is there more ludicrous Tequila out there?
P.S. Never drink and ride! That would truly be Ludicrous.
