So I just took the time off and my dad and I are going to brave the Tail of the Dragon this year.

We leave Maine on 6/16/12.

We are going to push it into a week long vacation with 4 days in North Carolina, and a days and a half for travel each way. I may need a padded seat cover.

Im excited, just wanted to share!!!

Do not forget to ride the surrounding area roads as well. They are just as good, if not better than the dragon itself. My favorite is either the skyway or the road that goes left just at the bottom of the dragon where the gas station is at. There is a 3 way intersection there, you will see it and should ride it at least once. It follows a river and leads into the town of Robbinsville.

you are in for a great time! like Sous said, make sure to ride more of the roads in the area...you have to ride the Dragon if you are in the area but the Cherohala Skyway is my favorite road up to this point :beerchug:

The Dragon is a cool destination but if you're going to ride that far you might want to hit Great Smokey Mountains, Cherohala Parkway, and the lower Blue Ridge Parkway / Linn Cove Via Duct (the NC high country). Just say'in. Not to take anything from the Dragon but it's just another NC/Tenn backroad like a hundred others with a couple nice photo ops.

I found this video on YouTube. It looks like some people take Busas on the Dragon. You can see then near the end.

take the blue ridge pkwy ride down you will enjoy it a lot more than the dragon. :D 469 mile cruise through the most scenic an probably nicest road through the mountains on the east coast.

DAM!! I just noticed it starts by Washington DC. Skyline dr. - then Blueridge pkwy

Not to make excuses - but I could not camp off the back of the Busa I owned - or the B-king or the GSXR 750 I currently own for 4 nights. Easily done if staying in hotels. We had a new guy to our group the last dragon ride who was on a sport and while packed down like a mule- he had a rough time managing his gear. No worries on the Harley - I toted his beer and food for him. I made him praise Harley's in order to drink every beer I toted. My Harley in full camping rig on Blue Ridge early on in the trip. Two days later I look like a homeless man with all sorts of stuff bungeed to the top and sides. Think Beverly Hill Billies driving into town.
