The Real Deal

So what is the real story with the Hayabusa? I have money down on a 2000 Busa, but you guys are scaring me away with talk of recalls, short tire life, short chain life, poor paint quality, random stalling, tire spinning while cornering, etc.. What gives? Does the Busa still have bugs to work out? I can live with glitches, but I don't have a ton of money to throw away on tires every 2K or so. What's the real deal? Let me know what you think. I may go with a 9R instead.

It depends on how u ride.Normal tire wear is around 4 to 5000 miles with normal riding. My Busa has never given me any type of problem.I didnt have any stalls, coughs sputters or anything.

Stay with the 'Busa. The recalls and the stalling was for the '99 models. As far as the tire wear..I have heard of people getting 4k out of rear tires, or you can burn them off with no miles at all. The Bridgestones will wear faster than say a Michelin Macadam, which I run on my FZR 1000 and have gotten as much as 7k out of a set when used for touring. My 2000 red and gray 'Busa has excellent paint, fit and finish. Chain wear? I heard that Suzuki got a bad run of chains and there should be no problems with the '00's. I will admit I am a Yamaha man at heart, but I think the 'Busa will be a great bike.

Hey Gixxer, how many miles you got on your Busa? What year is it? I can live with getting 4K out of tires. I typically ride over the speed limit with the occasional wide open run? Do you find rear wheel spin is a problem?

With a bike this powerful you will spin the wheel if you go heavy on the power, especially so in cold weather and you use the Bridgestones. My initial set lasted about 5K, more recently it is down to 2K due to more aggressive riding. Same applies for the chain, normal law abidding riding will not see any problems. Excessive wheelies, roll-ons, burn-outs etc will stretch your chain.

Any performance bike that is used aggressively is going to wear parts down. It just comes down to what you do with the bike. The finish on mine was excellent.

What do you consider to be agressive riding? I will be commuting weekly and riding the twisties on the weekends. Nothing too crazy, but I will occasionally let her run on the highway.

What everyone's said about "its all in how you ride" is very true. My '99 is running fine. I did have the cam chain tensioner and fuel screen recall. Total all of two hours in the shop no problems since. Paint, fit and finish on my blk/grey are perfect. 2,500 miles to date and still on the original tires. Should get another 1500 easy. Have replaced the pipes with Yoshi carbon fibers, the foot pegs with GSXR750 style and put on a new Tusbaki chain just because I wanted something a little better than OEM. If I were to give any advice on this issue, make damn sure that your dealer properly sets up the bike. You'll head off a bunch of problems down the road.

Once your ride yours and get it broken in properly you will never go back to others except maybe a GSXR750,TL-R or a R1 for the twisties.I ride everyday rain or shine. The bike looks good, rides great, and will temp other drivers of hi-performance cars or motorcycles to try to beat you but if you catch them before they take the jump on you good bye. This is the best bike so far for me,sold my 89GSXR-1100 and 98 TL1000R and the Hayabusa replace both these bikes. Now I have to sell the two Harleys and get it replaced with a 2000 Confederate Helicat motorcycle with the Merks engine and same paint job as my Copper and Silver Hayabusa and I would be a real happy camper.

Any action that leaves a darky in the road, scratches your sliders or keeps the front wheel airbourne for extended periods of time, everytime you start sub-consiously chanting "oh **** , oh **** , oh **** . . .. . . ."
